The Palm Coast area was first settled by Native American people in the early 17th century. The first white men to live in what is now Palm Coast were Englishmen who came to Florida during the French and Indian War. They named the area after a palm tree, which they found growing on their land. The first Europeans to note the trees and resources of the area were Spanish traders who explored Florida from 1665 to 1668. In 1821, Captain John Smith discovered Pensacola Bay and named it for his native country, Great Britain. In 1824, General James K. Polk established Fort Brooke along Pensacola Bay as part of his military campaign against Mexico. A year later, Congress passed a bill giving Florida statehood and naming it for President James Kenedy (1824-1828). That same year, Captain David Levy described the mouth of Santa Rosa River as being “fenced with high stakes” due to its commercial value for fishing. In 1839, George Washington Keyes founded Key West as an important trading post on Biscayne Bay before becoming governor of Florida in 1840. He designated parts of southwestFlorida as Seminole territory so that these Native American people could be kept under control while he administered government functions there. By 1850, Keyes had abandoned most of his holdings in southwestFlorida become part of modern day Miami-Dade County while portions became part of Hillsborough County today. In 1861, Confederate troops destroyed Union soldiers' barracks at Fort Brooke during an attack on Pensacola Bay by Confederate forces commanded by General Robert E Lee. The fort's destruction marked one of many key battles leading up to Civil War fought within this region including Battle of Gainesville which took place nearby on April 12th 1862 and Battle of Palatka which occurred two weeks later on May 4th 1862 within Miami-Dade County boundaries
