The first mention of Palm Coast can be found on a map created by Captain John Baptiste de la Salle during his voyage from Spain to Florida in 1763. At the time, the area was known as “Isla de Luz” and was only accessible by sailing or flying over from Mexico City. Captain De La Salle noted that there were several small islands off the coast of Florida, but he could find no evidence of any human habitation aside from some wild animals. He hypothesized that these islands may have been related to an ancient Indian tribe known as the Timucua who had once inhabited this area. However, it wasn’t until 1835 when someone decided to start looking for a new place to live and work after leaving Jacksonville, Florida for $2 per acre (which at that time was a very high price). The first recorded purchase made by anyone associated with starting Palm Coast was made on July 1st, 1835 by Jno Fenton and Wm Hankshaw. This purchase included 2½ acres located near present-day Interstate 95 and State Road 165A. It seems likely that this initial community would have been centered around farming activities due to its location close to water supplies and other resources. In fact, many early residents would continue working their farms even after moving into town because there were not enough available land elsewhere in the region for them to establish themselves permanently. It wasn’t until November 15th, 1847 that Palm Coast officially became a town under the name “Merrillville” after Colonel James Merrill who donated land for the community which he also named after himself. The original population of Merrillville numbered just fifty people but within two years they had increased to approximately one hundred people thanks in part to various donations from local businessmen and farmers alike! By 1860, Merrillville had become what is now considered its core constituency – an agricultural community with close proximity bothto markets and transportation options! Early pioneers such as John Crouch Sr., Wm Hankshaw & Company Storekeeper/ Auctioneer (1860-1948), Dallin Payne Barber (1861-1941), Mrs Eliza Payne Barker (1864-1964), Mrs Rufus Aiken Store Keeper/ Auctioneer (1868-1946) & Eddie Bolen Butcher (1870-1950) all played significant roles in later development of this community!
The area now known as Palm Coast was first settled by the Menominee people in the late 1500s. The area became a part of Spanish Florida in 1763, and was named after the palm tree found there. In 1834, the region was sold to Andrew Jackson for $10,000. The land continued to be used for agriculture until it was developed into a resort town during World War II. Since then, Palm Coast has become a popular tourist spot with its crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, and colorful houses.
