In 1935, the Palm Coast Police Department was established as a volunteer force and its first officer, W.H. “Pete” Murphy, served for three years. In 1927, Worth donated another piece of property to the community and this time he gave it to Dr. George Ponce de Leon for use as a research station for palm oil cultivation in Latin America. This donation allowed Palm Coast to become one of the earliest areas in Florida dedicated to palm oil production. After World War II ended and natural gas prices plummeted, Palm Coast's economy shifted towards tourism instead of agriculture. Today, tourism is still an important part of the town's economy and there are several dozen hotels and resorts located throughout its core area including downtown Winter Haven and palm beaches around Gulfport Bayou
The Palm Coast area was first settled by the Apalachee people in the late Pre-Columbian era. The area was later occupied by the Seminole, who were forced to leave by Spanish colonists in 1821. The region became part of Florida after US president James K. Polk made a Purchase of land from Spain in 1845. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson near Pensacola and were successful in driving out the Union troops. After the war ended, citrus farming began to expand into the area and homes were built around a small lake that became known as "Lake Worth." With growth came increased development and traffic on County Roads became an issue. In 1951, Governor Aventura dedicated a state park within walking distance of Lake Worth for recreational use and in 1987, State Road 522 was completed linking State Road 33 with Central Park Drive to form an arterial freeway network within Palm Coast
