The Palm Springs Air Force Base is home to the Desert Storm Museum, which tells the story of the air campaign that led to Kuwait's liberation. palm springs florida history timeline palm Springs was founded in 1917 by two brothers, Harry and Roy Palmer. The Palmers were from a family of farmers who had moved to the area from California. In 1917, Harry Palmer started a small grocery store on Palm Springs Canyon Road in what is now downtown Palm Springs. He and his brother Roy opened the store with $350 in cash and 10 sacks of flour. In 1923, they relocated their business to 124th Street and First Avenue in downtown Palm Springs. They continued to operate their store until they sold it in 1961 to J.C. Penney Company for $1 million dollars. The Palmers lived in downtown Palm Springs until 1959 when they moved out of town and passed away at age 98 years old. In 1961, Harry Palmer's son, Sam Palmer took over the operation of the business from his father while also serving as president of incorporatedPalm Spring Chamber of Commerce from 1957-1964 (now known as the City Council). During this time period, SamPalmer increased sales at the store by 50% each year through marketing initiatives such as special offers and flash mobs that targeted youths living near the store (i.e., high school students). On November 17, 1984, Sam Palmer died after a long battle with leukemia at age 91 years old; he was survived by his wife Dianne (née Smith), daughters Bonnie D’Angelo (b 1977) and Lisa D’Angelo (b 1978), grandchildren Brooke Sawaya (b 1990) and Levi Sawaya (b 1992), greatgrandchildren Sydney Avila Sawaya (b 2002)and Kiari Avila Sawaya(b 2006). After Sam Palmer's death, his son Tony became head manager of the store while Dianne served as President Emeritus until her retirement on December 31st, 2009. Through its many incarnations over time - retail chain JCPenney Corporation operated both stores under one roof for eighteen months during 1991-1992; local real estate development company Suncoast Properties redeveloped 124th Street between 1st Ave./Foothill Rd./Saguaro Rd.; independent operator Dick’s Sporting Goods leased space adjacent to former JCPenney site beginning May 7th 1998 thru September 30th 2001; then an affiliation with Macy's resulted before being acquired by Sears Holdings Corp.; finally becoming independently owned again on October 15th 2009 The first incarnation of JCPenney Corporation was formed on November 17 th 1944 when Harry Pralter & Sons Grocery Store #3 opened up shop inside County Auditorium complex off US 101 North next door to Hollywood Bowl following successful debut tour hosted by Vernon Jordan which included performances by Joe Pyke & His Orchestra including an appearance by Elvis Presley In 1951 another branch was opened up just east side Of State Fairgrounds across street from current day Department Store location - this branch became known as “The Gromit Branch” due to playful character created front window featuring comic book drawings depicting gremlin named Gromit used throughout tenancy
