The Coast Guard has been in Palm Springs, Florida since 1915. The first coast guard station was established in the town of Lighthouse Point on April 8, 1915. The present day Coast Guard Station at East Beach was opened on October 25, 1944. The first patrol boat stationed in Palm Springs was the SS "John F Kennedy" which arrived on August 3, 1945 from New York City with a detachment of marine guards to provide security for the Golden Gate Bridge during the San Francisco Earthquake. A second coast guard patrol boat, the CG "Olympic", arrived on October 15th 1947 and served until 1972 when it became part of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. In 1974, a new station building was constructed at East Beach which then housed both the Commanding Officer's Office and Patrol Boat Operational Control Center as well as four watercraft used for boating patrols along portions of Orange and Riverside Counties including Anacapa Island off Santa Barbara County; Seal Beach between Dana Point and Torrance; Big Sur between Monterey Peninsula and Carmel Valley; and Menlo Park between Palo Alto and Saratoga Peninsula. In 1987 an Auxiliary Rescue Squadron (ARS) was added to support Search-and-rescue missions deep sea fishing trips out of Clearwater Harbor located about 12 miles south of Clearwater Key West. An ARS unit also operates from Dana Point now known as Air National Guard Unit with jurisdiction over all waters within 2 NMs east or west of NAS Corona Del Mar . A SAR helicopter unit is currently based at Miramar air base near Laguna Niguel . 1st Class Petty Officers are assigned to each Coast Guard Station providing general supervision over their detachments who perform various duties such as petty enforcement operations ashore as well as flyering/landing helicopters when provided by state or local agencies etc...

In 1892, Palm Springs was incorporated as a village and then became a town in 1903. In 1912, it became an unincorporated community. The first post office was established in 1912. On July 1, 1916, the community changed its name to Palm Springs because of the recent addition of Palm Desert to California as well as being named after the spring that is located near the original post office building.
