Military deployments have a long and varied history in Palm Springs, Florida. The city has been host to a variety of troops and military personnel since World War II. From the Spanish-American War to Desert Storm, Palm Springs has seen its fair share of military activity. The City of Palm Springs was incorporated on November 1, 1912. At the time, it was one of the largest cities in Southern California. One of the first things Mayor Harry Sayers did when he took office was to build a new armory on First Street which would serve as the city’s primary center for defense. It was during this time that local residents began donating items such as guns, ammunition, tents and vehicles to help support military efforts overseas. One of the most memorable moments in city history came during World War II when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered American troops into action and they commenced Operation Husky. This massive offensive saw over 100,000 soldiers march through downtown Palm Springs and into neighboring towns. More than 5,000 civilians were killed or injured in the attacks. Aftermath from this conflict led to increased donations from local citizens towards war efforts by both government and private companies alike. In 1949, California became an executive state and Palms Spring became part of the newly created State of Nevada within that state’s government structure…. As Nevada grew more complex with its own governing structures it also required an updated armory which would be located within town limits outside of Carson City (the then capital). In 1957 construction began on what is now known as “The Pentagon” inside Of Town Hall Park adjacent to Interstate 15… During this timepalm springs mayor Don Edwards declared January 6th National Defense Day in order to celebrate our community’s support for national security policies throughout these years….. National Guard units have been stationed here continuously since 1970……Today we are proud to commemorate our military commitment by hosting The United States Military Academy at West Point which provides opportunities for our youth who may not otherwise have access to high quality education

They arrived in a small town on the banks of the Colorado River called Palm Springs. The Palms were a prominent family in early American society and had a large ranch that stretched from east to west between Temecula Canyon and Indian Wells Valley. The Palms made some important contributions to early Florida history- most notably through their ownership of Stonington Hall, built as a summer home for Governor Manuel de la Vega in 1823. The hall is now part of the University of South Florida's main campus. In addition, they are credited with developing what is now downtown Palm Springs. Palm Springs was also an important center for movie production during the silent era. One notable filmographer/director who resided in Palm Springs was Cecil B. DeMille who directed several successful films there including "The Three Musketeers" (1915), "The Ten Commandments" (1917), and "Pleasantries" (1920). Additionally, other famous directors such as John Ford and Sam Goldwyn filmed here such as "The Bob Newhart Show" (1948) and "This Is Your Life" (1965). On January 14th, 1959, after more than 60 years of occupancy by humans only animals were admitted into the city limits when County Animal Services closed its doors following allegations that they were mistreating dogs inside their property. A private group led by banker Marv Levy purchased all 176 acres outside the city limits which became known as Victory Ranch Park today - home to over 100 different types of pets including horses, llamas, camels, goats, rabbits and chickens! In 1990s Palm Springs experienced significant development with plans announced for high-end housing developments both within city limits and beyond it onto adjacent properties including: gated communities like Residence Inn by Marriott; luxury Villas developed near CenturyLink Stadium; shopping malls like Hillsborough Village; mixed use districts such as Fashion Place; mixed income neighborhoods like Westchester Village; new highways being built parallel to Interstate 10 nearby; new restaurants opening up around town with names like Five Guys Burgers & Fries or SBE's Market Grocery
