The Palm Springs Naval Base has been a major military and naval installation in the area for over sixty years. The base is home to two fleets of submarines, five helicopter squadrons, and thirty-six ships. It also houses the USS Ortega (LHD 5) which is used as a floating marine barracks. The base was originally established in 1905 as Naval Station Page Field on the banks of Lake Arrowhead. In 1941, it became Naval Air Station Miramar and was renamed again to the present day Navy Station Palm Springs in 1945. One of the most famous gifts given by the United States Navy to Palm Springs residents was USS Ponce (LPD-5) which arrived on board USS Enterprise (CVN-65) on December 12, 1944. The ship's crew gave an emotionalWelcome Home party for Ponce's owners who had come from all corners of the country to visit their new home at NAS Palmdale-the largest naval air station west of San Francisco Bay Area. That same year, NAS Palmdale also received donation from Mrs MacArthur and her husband General Douglas MacArthur Jr., Commanderin Chief Pacific Fleet during World War II who donated his personal aircraft hangar at Yokota Air Base south of Tokyo so that NAS Palmdale could house more than fifty combat planes including Lockheed P2V Neptune fighters! On April 9, 1947, NASPalmdale became an operational USAF facility under control of then Vice Admiral John F Kennedy when it stood up as Fighter Wing Fourteen (Fourteenth AF). This made NASPalm Desert one of only two USAAF airfields outside California open to active duty fighter pilots! In 1957 President Dwight Eisenhower signed Executive Order 13436 which activated Naval Air Facility El Toro for use as a Marine Corps Auxiliary Airfield until it merged with Marine Corps Reserve Command at Camp Pendleton in 1969!
