The history of the Palm Springs Naval Air Station began in 1922 when US Navy Commodore George Dewey decided to build a naval air station in Southern California. The first aircraft were acquired from the San Diego Naval Air Station and Deliveries of U-2s began in late 1945. By 1951, PNSPalm Springs had become one of America's most advanced naval air stations with over 100 acres of land dedicated to its use. In 1957, the Naval Air Weapons Station was moved to PNSPalmSprings and it became a major center for both bomber and fighter aviation. The facility produced some of America's most famous adversaries such as the Soviet Union, China, and Yugoslavia. With its extensive hangar system, PNS Palmsprings also served as an important training ground for pilots and navigators during World War II, Korea War, Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. In 1991-1992 NAS Palm Springs played a significant role in Operation Restore Order during the Gulf War by providing refueling support for USAF bombers operating over Iraq. On 1 October 1992NAS Palm Springs transitioned from anactive duty navy station to a military reserve station status effective 7 November 1992 known as Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL). Since then NAS Palmspring has been used primarily as a storage depot for surplus materials related to the military including munitions, missiles/artillery components and ship parts. Today NAS Palm Springs is home to three Coast Guard Cutters which provide service protection along with several hundred civilian employees who maintain large open area facilities managed by NAVAIR at NBPL

The city was founded by citrus farmers in 1892 as a small community on Palm Springs Lake. Today, Palm Springs is known for its high-end art galleries and luxury hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton. The first inhabitants of what is now Palm Springs were Native American Chief Manuel Fontainebleau and his wife Yvonne de la Tour. Fontainebleau had come from France in search of rich botanical resources. Heading upriver with his men, they discovered an uninhabited valley with palm trees that would be their new home. In 1892, he named the area Palms Spring after himself and his wife’s family name de la Tour (the original spelling). The first house built in Palms Spring was erected by James Blythe (1829-1911), who ran a small lumber business near where today’s Riverside Drive meets Interstate 10. By 1893, Blythe had developed into one of the leading citrus growers in central Florida; his trees flourished under the warm climate of this region. His son John Aiken (1893-1976) also became influential during this time period; he served as mayor of Harbor City from 1951 to 1957 and later helped develop Anaheim into one of Southern California’s most prominent cities during the 1960s and 1970s when it grew rapidly through annexation of adjacent municipalities
The Palm Springs area was settled by the Chumash people in the late 1700s. In 1871, The Desert Post reported that a group of Mormons had set out from Salt Lake City to purchase land at what is now Palm Springs. The Mormons named their new settlement after a spring in nearby Cathedral Canyon, which they found while exploring the region. construction on the original town began in 1872, and by 1880, Palm Springs had become an established neighborhood with its own school system and post office. palm springs history
