The Palmetto Bay Air National Guard detachment deployed a gift to the city of Palmettos in February 2009. The gift was a Boeing 727-200airplane. The plane had been donated by the Florida Air National Guard and was painted with the symbol, "TampaBayAirNational Guard." The squadron that donated the plane also had an insignia on each door of the plane, which read "PalmettosAirlines flying support for our troops." The Palmetto Bay detachment's commander, Lt. Col. Bruce Aiken, said that this is not the first time that members of his squadron have flown in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. He added that this is one of the most unique planes that he has ever seen and flew in support of any military operation. Lt. Col. Aiken said that when he learned about what had happened to the airplane in Tampa Bay, he knew it was something special because it was one of only two planes from his squadron that were still operational at the time. He added that even though it is no longer flyable, he knows how important this plane will be to those who depend on it for their travel needs during these military operations.

After France lost control of Louisiana in 1763, Spain took over and called this part of Cuba San Juan de la Palma-Bainbridge Island-Gulf Stream Estuary because of its proximity to those waters. In 1821, Captain John Smith discovered and explored this area while exploring the Florida Keys. He named it after the palmetto tree he found on his journey.
