The Palmetto Bay Air Force Station was the home of the Florida Air National Guard's No. 605th Fighter Wing, which flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft during World War II. The wing operated from Palm Beach County Airport until its closure in 1957. On November 12, 1957, the wing and its equipment were transferred to Tallahassee International Airport and became part of the newly formed Florida Air National Guard's No. 305th Fighter Wing. The 305th used North American F-86 Sabres as their primary fighter squadron during the Vietnam War; however, it never served in combat against Viet Cong forces.
