The Palmetto Bay Army Reserve was activated in 1917, and it has served in many different roles throughout its history. The reserve is now stationed in several states, as well as internationally. One of the most recent deployments was to Saudi Arabia in 2018. One of the earliest deployments of the Palmetto Bay Army Reserve was to World War I. It served on the Western Front and helped fight for France. After the war, the reserve was transferred to Florida where it played a role in Reconstruction. In 1936, it became part of the National Guard Bureau and participated in Spanish-American War missions. In 1957, the state Legislature renamed the Palmetto Bay Army Reserve Camp “John F. Kennedy Presidential Unit Citation” in honor of President John F Kennedy’s service during World War II with distinction as an Executive Officer with Company E (5th Infantry Regiment). The unit also received a Service Medal for participation at Guadalcanal (9/13/19E). From 1959-1971, Headquarters and Headquarters Company were located at Fort Myers military base; from 1971-1988 they were located at Daytona Beach Naval Air Station before moving back to Fort Myers permanently in 1988. Since its activation,Army Reserve unit has been mobilized multiple times for various events such as hurricanes Irma and Maria, Desert Storm &Operation Neptune’s Spear; Deployments included both domestic & international locations including Saudi Arabia 2017; Hurricane Florence response efforts - Duval County Sheriff's Office detachment deploying overnight into downtown Charlotte NC which encountered extremely high winds & heavy rains; FL State Fair 2019

After Andrew struck mainland America in 1992, much damage was done to key infrastructure including the Port of Miami which left Palmetto Bay struggling financially until it emerged from bankruptcy in 2004 under new management led by Mayor Carlos Gimenez Jr.. The Swallow’s Nest Plantation is one of the oldest extant plantations in Florida, and it was here that the first white settlers arrived in 1794. The area continued to be heavily populated throughout the 1800s, with mills, farming operations, and shipping being major businesses. However, by 1900, the population had slowly declined as a result of several factors including loss of jobs in the late 1800s and1900s floods that destroyed homes and businesses along the bay. In recent years there have been efforts to revitalize the area, with some businesses opening up and new development starting to take form.
