The modern Palmetto Bay Army Base was founded in 1925 and the first military units were activated in 1927. The base saw service in World War II and during the Korean War, but it closed its doors for good in 1991. However, the history of army gift history goes back much further than that. In 1892, a group of businessmen from Palmetto Bay formed an association to promote commerce and industry within the town. The group came up with the idea of building a military post in downtown Palmetto Bay so that local businesses could have access to soldiers who might be needed on occasion. The post was initially called Fort Aaron and it served as a recruiting ground for troops recruited from all over Florida. It wasn’t until 1928 that the name changed to Fort Worth Post #1 after Major General James W. Richardson became Commandant at Fort Worth Army Depot. In 1937, Fort Worth Post #2 was established and it continued serving as an armory until 1945 when it was decommissioned and re-activated at Camp Blanding near Jacksonville, Florida as part of Phase I of the Military Districts Plan (MDP). The MDP led to increased troop deployment throughout SouthwestFlorida region which eventually created jobs for locals during this time period. Army Post #3 opened its doors on October 1st, 1925 within walking distance of government buildings located at 100 E Market Street in Downtown Tampa. This post served as Headquarters for both Garrison Commander Dwight D Eisenhower’s Allied Expeditionary Force Unit 5th United States Infantry Division (AEFUD) during World War II when Tampa had become one of four major naval centers along with New York City, Miami Beach, and Jacksonville; these centers acted as command posts for allied forces fighting against Japan across all three wars theaters while providing resources such as food, ammunition and medical care to troops stationed ashore or afloat worldwide. Fort Worth Post #3 is also significant because it is one of only two original US Army posts still operational today outside of Arlington County VA where active duty troops are assigned today pursuant to 10 U S Code Section 421(a)(1) which authorizes “the use by Federal agencies or any portion thereof of real propertyowned by private individuals … except insofar as such use may conflict with constitutional rights reserved thereto” . After World War II ended there was less need for military personnel rostering so Ft Worth Post #3 slowly disbanded while other posts around Tampa continued serving their purpose until they too were disbanded in 1971 including Garrison Commander John T Foust’s disbandment order dated January 8th following Operation Neptune Rising which began on December 8th 1946 when Japanese forces landed at Pinellas County Harbor resulting in over 400 Marines landing ontoshore unopposed followed by air assaults using B-29 bombers prior to Japanese withdrawal; these operations marked Bucs final confrontation with Japan leading up to their eventual surrender days later on September 2nd1945 . The Palmetto Bay area straddles the central Florida coast and includes parts of Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Martin County. The bay was originally a part of ancient Cuba and contains many fossils from that time. The area was first settled by Native Americans in the 1500s. In 1795, the British established Fort Duval in what is now Palm Beach County to monitor American trade with Cuba. The fort was destroyed in 1805 by a U.S. force under Commodore James Ketchum after an attempt by Spanish settlers to take over the fort. In 1835, the United States acquired much of present day Miami-Dade County when it acquired Florida from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the Mexican War (1846-48). There were several attempts by English colonists to settle here but they all failed because of lack of land or water resources. In 1868, Congress authorized President Andrew Johnson to purchase 1 million acres (0.8 km2) along both sides of Gulf Stream Boulevard for $5 per acre (1/4 ha). This land became known as "the Treasure Coast." As development increased along Gulf Stream Boulevard, people began using tidal coves for harboring ships and fishing fleets during low tide. In 1896, a pier was built at Palmetto Bayou for shipping goods across the bay from Key West to Miami Beach through mangrove swampy areas on either side of where it crossed Biscayne Bay
The Palmetto Bay area was first settled by the Kissimmee River Indians in the early 1800s. By 1819, a group of British traders had founded Fort Myers and named it for the palmetto trees that lined the bay. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1825, when John Pickens founded Cedar Key. In 1840, a group of Seminoles raided Fort Myers and burned down most of the town before being forced to flee by white troops. In 1848, the Seminoles again attacked Fort Myers, this time resulting in large numbers of civilian casualties. After a three-year siege, Indian skirmishes ended with an all-American victory at Palmetto Bay Bridge over the Kissimmee River. As part as Ft Myers grew into one of Florida's largest towns and its economic center, racial tensions began to rise. African Americans were not allowed to work on public works or own land until after World War II; they first started arriving in significant numbers in 1940. The violence associated with race riots led to increased police patrols and prosecutions during this period; however, high rates of crime persisted well into the 21st century
