The Coast Guard Museum in Palmetto Bay, Florida has a collection of Coast Guard gift history dating back to the early 1900s. The Palmetto Bay Coast Guard Station was founded in 1925 and is located on the Bradenton Beach Peninsula. The station has a staff of 46 officers and paramedics, as well as an airboat stationed at the Raccoon Key Marina. The Coast Guard also operates a boat dock, boating trails, and a lifeguard tower.
Palmetto Bay is a small town in Putnam County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The name "Palmetto Bay" was given to the bay by Captain Georgepalmettus Plantation owner John Henson in 1795. In 1821, Palmetto Bay became a part of Fort Brooke military post and began being called Fort Brooke Naval Station. The name change occurred because it no longer extended inland to include much of Putnam County as it once did.
In 1903, Palmetto Bay High School opened and became one of the first high schools in Orlando; it closed in 2007 after several years of financial difficulty.
In 1927-28, Major General James Wainwright built Fort Brooke on the shoreline of Palmetto Bay for use as an artillery fortress during World War II. It served as a training ground for American Troops during that time; however, due to its location on land which had been purchased from the Indians by Colonel Richard Montgomery (later Governor), fortification construction stopped until 1957 when it reopened as Palm Beach National Military Park with an underground ammunition magazine and other features.

The Palmetto Bay Chamber of Commerce website shows that there are many events taking place throughout the year such as Artisan Fairs>, Antiques Show>, Golf Tournament>, civic committee meetings>. There are also several restaurants located here including: Red Lobster', Dockside Grille', Just For Laughs'. Several local businesses have moved into new buildings or have changed their names since 2007 such as: First Coast Baking Company', True Value Hardware'. A few old businesses remain but they have seen less business activity due to competition from newer stores.
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the community since 1790. The Coast Guard is responsible for maritime security and rescue, protection of coastal communities, and the education and training of their members. In 1916, the United States Congress established a coast guard force that would provide law enforcement and public safety services along America’s coasts. The Coast Guard also provides humanitarian relief through Operation Neptune’s Spear. In 1951, the Coast Guard received its first helicopter-based unit, which was used for search and rescue operations during Hurricane View in 1958. The helicopters allowed the Coast Guard to conduct Search And Rescue Operations from more remote locations which saved many lives during this time period. Additionally, in 1978, a new Helicopter Division was established which specialized in anti-submarine warfare (ASW). This unit became operational on October 1st 1980 and continued to serve until 2003 when it was replaced by an Aircraft Division. Since its establishment as a service within the U.S Department of Transportation in 1913, the Coast Guardsman has played an important role in maintaining our country’s coastline. Today, there are over 14500 members stationed throughout America’s territorial waters; including 5200 combatant vessels with full equipment necessary for both marine law enforcement activities and ASW operations; as well as over 5100 airmen who contribute to homeland security via support mission flights!

The Palmetto Bay region in Florida was first settled by the Algonquian-speaking mound builders of the Mississippian culture about 12,000 years ago. The area was explored and claimed by Spain in 1565, but remained part of England until 1763. In 1814, Florida became a United States territory following the Mexican-American War. The bay formed as two parallel ridges on the mainland—the Gulf Coastal Ridge to the north and the Everglades Ridge to the south—and gradually widened as water levels rose. By 1850, it had reached its current width. During Spanish control over Florida, Palmetto Bay formed part of what were called "Perez's Canals." These canals connected Tampa with St Petersburg and other nearby cities and villages. The canals were built in order to provide fresh water for farming and military purposes. They also served as a way to shipping goods between Tampa and St Petersburg. During American control of Florida, the palmetto bay was used for naval operations against British forces during the Seminole Wars (1835-1846). The US Navy built several warships at this time including USS Constitution (1797), USS Hornet (1898), USS Galveston (1899) and USS Perry (1850). Afterward, they developed into one of America's great fleets. After World War II ended, development in Florida slowed down due to economic recession throughout most of Southwestern USA. However, there has been recent growth in areas such as Orlando County which is located along Interstate 441 just east of Jacksonville Beach

The area became a key agricultural center after Spain opened up the land to farming in the late 1800s.
