Palmetto Bay is a census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Palmetto Bay CDP includes most of the towns and villages of Palm Bay and Yacht Harbour on Longboat Key. The town of Palm Bay was settled by English colonists in 1763 as "New Providence" after they arrived on Longboat Key from Georgia. In 1836, the first post office in present-day Palm Bay opened under the name "Hilton Head". In 1896, Tampa became an incorporated city and Palmetto Bay became a rural town independent of Tampa until 1950 when it joined the newly formed municipality of Nassau County. On May 12, 1957, Hurricane Betsy struck southwestern Florida killing more than 150 people and causing extensive damage to both Floridian communities along the Gulf Coast including PalmBay. On October 15th that year Governor Claude Pepper signed into law The Bahamas Disaster Relief Act which made state assistance available for victims of hurricanes Betsy and Donatella throughout Nassau County as well as Pinellas County adjacent to Tampa. This act also provided money for infrastructure stabilization projects such as bridges and roads across bayous throughout Nassau County which were destroyed or heavily damaged by Betsy. This event marked one of only two times during hurricane season that state government was called upon to provide unprecedented disaster relief assistance beyond what had been done previously through private donations or individual contributions from citizens within their respective jurisdictions/cities/towns/villages etc... Calhoun ordered the Seminoles to leave Florida because of their conflicts with European settlers. This led to a decline in population and commerce in this part of Florida until after World War II when new manufacturing opportunities arrived. After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005, many people sought refuge onshore at Lighthouse Point near Pensacola before fleeing into the open water as Hurricane Katrina approached. As a result of this evacuation process, much valuable cultural heritage was lost including artifacts dating back to pre-European settlement times such as pottery shards found at Belle Isle Lagoon where Native Americans used to gather shellfish during floods season.
