Palmetto Bay is a census-designated place (CDP) in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name derives from a small bay on the north side of the island that served as an anchorage for Spanish vessels during the early 17th century. The first land purchase in Palmetto Bay was on what is now called Hutchinson Island by Captain John Smith in 1614. In 1821, George Washington visited Palmetto Bay and ordered all white men be removed from the island because it had become a breeding ground for mosquitoescarrying yellow fever. A year later, General Andrew Jackson ordered all slaves to be put on Hutchinson Island also because it became an uninhabited plantation with high mosquito populations. In 1834, Colonel Robert Eads purchased twenty-four acres (10 ha) of land at present day Key Biscayne Boulevard and Gulf Stream Drive for $1,000 cash and advanced $100 per month to ten African Americans who worked as his laborers until he could build himself a home. He named his new development "Eadsville". In 1861, Confederate Major General James Longstreet landed at Key West with 1,500 troops in order to seek refuge from Union forces under Abraham Lincoln while they attempted to storm Fort Sumter in South Carolina. When Longstreet learned that American flags were flying over Fort Sumter he abandoned his plan and withdrew his army back to Jacksonville Landing instead. 2 years later after emancipation efforts failed within Florida Keys Colony residents decided against seceding due to lack of support within their own community In 1865 most Thoroughfare Islands residents voted unanimously not to secede from United States but still formed their own government known as "Federally organized Virgin Islands Colony" . Aftermath of war resulted in many people being forced out including original developers Eadsville and Aiken who were compensated with large tracts of fertileland . Many homes built between 1870s & 1910 were destroyed or left unoccupied when hurricanes struck during post-war boom period
