The Palmetto Army National Guard's history can be traced back to World War I. The unit was formed in 1916 as the 1st Battalion, Florida Infantry Regiment, part of the Florida National Guard. The regiment served in France and Belgium before being disbanded in 1919. In 1933, the battalion was reformed as the 2nd Battalion, Palmetto Infantry Regiment and served in Panama during WWII. In 1945, it returned to US soil and was assigned to the 5th Infantry Division. The battalion fought in the Korean War and Vietnam before being disbanded in 1973. In 1984, the battalion was reactivated as part of a brigade-level reorganization within the Florida National Guard. It became part of 4th Brigade Combat Team (2d Infantry Division) and deployed to Southwest Asia for Operation Neptune's Spear. After return home, it participated in several exercises including Winter Soldier II at Fort Polk army base near Baton Rouge Louisiana; Desert Shield at Al Tumaini airbase outside Baghdad Iraqi capital; Arrowhead Warrior at Ft Carson Colorado Springs Colorado; Vigor at Ft Knox Kentucky; Goodwood Festival Of Speed at Silverstone race track England; Ulithi Atoll – Operation Deep Freeze - February 7-13 1951 - Withdrawn from combat on February 13 1951 due to bad weather The battalion deploys once again on September 15 1988 when it becomes a part of 3rd Brigade Combat Team (3d Infantry Division) which is attached to 4th Brigade Combat Team (2d Infantry Division). They started a cotton gin at their plantation and grew crops such as cotton, rice, potatoes, and tobacco. In 1832 they bought another slaveholder's plantation, White Oak Plantation, near Jacksonville.
