Palmetto is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, palmetto had a total land area of , of which was water. The first European to visit Palmetto Island was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he sighted it from his ship "Crete" on its way back from a voyage around Cape St Vincent. The name for Palmetto originally referred to both the island and its inhabitants: "Pallido", meaning 'dark coloured'. In 1613, Governor Manuel de Montiano gave ownership of Palmetto to Colonel Antonio López de Santa Cruz with instructions that it should be used as an agricultural estate for Spanish colonists living on Miami Bay. In 1743 Captain James Cook sailed past Palmetto while exploringMiami bay and named it after Lieutenant-Governor Thomas Nicholls's wife who resided at nearby Weston on Biscayne Bay (the modern day city of Miami). Captain Cook also noted another small island located about northeast of present day Palm Beach - this was Fogo de Tudo (the largest and most easterly point on South America) which he called "Eira". In 1768 Captain John Watts discovered sugarcane growing on Fogo and called the island Sugar Loaf Isle; this naming would be adopted by later generations including local historian Willis Jarrell who wrote that ". . . there never were any people in these parts but Negroes until white men came." Anglo-Spanish conflict over control of south Florida began in 1821 when Governor Manuel de Montiano ceded Pensacola Bay to Spain under the Adams–Onís Treaty following American victory over Mexico in the Mexican–American War. The name comes from a palmetto tree that grows on the banks of the Hillsborough River. The first Europeans to reach Palmetto were Spanish conquistadors in 1513. In 1821, Seminole Indians led by Chief Joseph surrendered to General Andrew Jackson at Sunbury Heights. As part of this deal, the Seminoles were forced to leave their land east of Tampa and ceded it to the U.S., forming Sammamish County today. The citrus industry was important in Palmetto’s early history because it allowed for a large influx of immigrants who helped make Palmetto what it is today. For many years, oranges were one of Tampa’s top businesses and its exports reached as far away as Rome and London. Today, some key industries still employing locals include health care (especially plastic surgery), engineering, agriculture ( chiefly corn) and manufacturing (including food processing). In 1924, Palm Beach County was created from parts of Hillsborough and Pasco counties along with southern Martin county including St Petersburg. At that time, palm trees were not commonly found in Florida so Citrus Park was built near downtown Palm Beach for storage purposes only before being sold off to various developers over time culminating with its current use as an open-air shopping mall known locally as “The Mall” which opened in 1959 . From its inception through World War II untilafter 1945 when combat operations ended there was little economic activity taking place in either Floridians or Japanese nationals living here during those times which also impacted Japanese American citizens living on Pinellas Island who had their own economy going but did not have access to much outside resources like jobs or services that Allied Forces military personnel needed during their stay ashore
