Palmetto is a small town in the Miami-Dade County area of Florida, United States. It is located on the eastern shore of Biscayne Bay and is one of two towns in Miami-Dade County that are not part of the city of Miami. In 2010, its population was estimated to be 46,402. Palmetto's history dates back to 1835 when it was established as a Hunting and Fishing village by Colonel James Wolkentin and Captain George Fenton. The first white settler in what is now Palmetto was John Troup who arrived in 1838. The first post office at Palmetto was established on July 8, 1840. By 1861, it had developed into a small farming community with a Methodist church and a schoolhouse. In 1892, an express railway line called the Floridian ran through PALMETTO; this railroad connected Tampa with Jacksonville, Florida and became known as "The Floridian". The station also served as the terminus for passenger trains between Tampa and Jacksonville until 1966 when Amtrak took over operation of these routes. In 1925, PALMETTO became part of Doral neighborhood annexed by Doral Heights which then became part of Kendall Park Neighborhood annexed by Kendall Park in 1950s after being created from parcels that were given away to make way for new homes developments around that time. In 1970s PALMETTO passed through some reclamation activities led by Lake Worth Land Authority creating an artificial beachhead nearOld Cutler Road known today as "PALMETTO BEACH" - with access only via private drive (the beach access remains open to the public). After years of debate over whether or not PALMETTO should become incorporated into Doral Heights or remain independent again Residents voted overwhelmingly (by a majority) to incorporate palmetto back into their own municipality on December 1st 1994 - rejoining what has been called "The City That never Sleeps."
