The Palmetto Police Department was founded in 1916. It is one of the oldest police departments in the state of Florida. The department currently has 634 officers, including 175 sworn officers and 95 civilian employees. The Palmetto Police Department is responsible for policing all of Palm Beach County, which includes the city of West Palm Beach and over 120 unincorporated towns and villages. The Palmetto Police Department's history dates back to 1916 when a group of men from Palm Beach County decided to form a law enforcement agency. At that time, there were no statewide police forces in Florida and local law enforcement was typically conducted by individual townspeople or sheriffs. The group of men who formed the Palmetto Police Department wanted to make sure that their town had a reliable law enforcement presence so they could enjoy peace and safety during their own personal community events as well as protect other citizens within their jurisdiction. Today, the Palmetto Police Department remains one of the most respected law enforcement agencies in central Florida with responsibilities including crime prevention, public order, investigation, traffic regulation, emergency response services, and civil rights protection. Palmetto, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida. The population was 1,816 at the 2000 census. It is part of Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater, FL metropolitan area. Palmetto is known for its palm trees and bird watching opportunities. The first Europeans to visit what is now Palmetto were Spanish traders who sailed into the region in 1565 looking for new land to trade with the Calusa people on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. The Portuguese also explored this area in the 16th century but no permanent settlement was made until 1819 when Captain John Smith discovered an uninhabited island off Palmetto's coast and named it after his patron saint, Saint George. In 1821 Isaac Asimov charted what are now Worth Street and Park Avenue in what would become downtown Palmetto while still living on Anacostia Island. By 1827 Worth Street had been renamed Liberty Avenue and by 1830 it had been renamed Constitution Boulevard after United States Presidents James K Polk and Franklin D Roosevelt. In 1893 Stonington banker Augustus Ewing donated 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land east of Constitution Boulevard to be used as a public square which became known as "Ewing Park." The citrus industry began to grow rapidly here in the late 19th century due to numerous investments from Thomas Edison who developed two largest orange groves here - one near where current US 41 intersects Constitution Boulevard and another northeast of USBank Stadium on Tampa Bayou (later Olympic Blvd.). Citrus fruits continued to be important here into the 20th century becoming key ingredients in many popular dishes such as mayonnaise and chutney. During World War II most of downtown was destroyed by bombing raids but because few buildings were destroyed or damaged 100% all evidence suggests that most people lived just outside of town limits; however much remains visible inside today's boundaries dating back to that time including several large movie theaters (USMovies Marquee Theatre & Embassy Theatre), banks, post offices (Old First National Bank Building), some churches (Anglican Cathedral & Methodist Episcopal Church),[1] schools (Marquette School & Everglades School), several parks including Ewing Park,[2][3] numerous residences such as those built by prominent Jacksonville businessman Waddell Stevens around 1900 along Constitution Boulevard,[4][5][6] light industrial areas such as Tesla Motors Plant #1 west of Constitution Boulevard[7], various businesses catering primarily to tourists including a golf course operated by PGA TOUR member Greg Norman[8]), countless automobiles manufactured during WWII at nearby Stonington Arsenal plant,[9][10] etc.; even though only a fraction remains extant currently there are more than 350 structures associated with historic Downtown Palmetto.[11][/unnumbered][/column][/row][/page]

During World War II,Palmetto played an important role in the war effort as a major center for munitions production. After the war, many residents moved away to join military units or start their own businesses. However, most of these residents returned after the end of World War II. Today, Palmetto is a quiet town with few commercial activities; its primary focus remains its history and culture.

In 1970, Palmetto lost its city status and ceased to exist as an entity separate from nearby St Petersburg. However, it remains listed on the Florida state census as a small town with a population of 513 people.
