Panama City Beach is a city in Panama and the capital of the province of Chiriquí. It is located on the bay, on an island that forms part of the Panama Canal and has been known since pre-Hispanic times for its year-round pearl fishing. As a result, it became one of the most important ports in Latin America. The city's history begins with Spanish conquistadors who founded San Miguel de Allende in 1524 as part of their attempt to open up new trade routes between the Americas and Europe. The town grew rapidly during World War II when many American servicemen came to spend time and supplies while fighting in Europe. Panama City Beach was also hit hard by Hurricane Irma which made landfall on September 20th, 2018. After Irma had passed, many people decided to come back to enjoy what had once been a devastated area. The present dayPanama City Beach was first settled by Native Americans in 1795 as part of an effort to gain access to rich seafood stocks around Lake Nicaragua. By 1821, Panama had become a colony under Spanish rule with a population of about 60 families. In 1837, after Mexico achieved independence from Spain, San Miguel de Allende became the first municipio panameño (panamanian municipality) but its status remained informal until 1861 when it became an autonomous entity within the newly created Republic of Central America under president Nicolás Maduro’s presidency. The U.S.Army Garrison of Panama City Beach, Florida was established in 1898 and has served as a garrison throughout the history of the United States Military in Panama City Beach. The garrison is now known as Fort Walton Beach Army Base and it is one of two military installations on the Treasure Coast withinFlorida's Miami-Dade County boundaries. The fortification at Panama City Beach began with small defense posts manned by soldiers from neighboring Spanish colonies until 1812 when Captains Manuel Antonio Valenzuela and Fernando de la Costa founded what would become Fort George Enterprise on San Juan Island to guard against British attacks from Canada. In 1821, Commodore James Kellett ordered construction of a new forts at both ends of Santa Marta Bay in order to protect American shipping interests in the region during the Mexican War of Independence. In 1824, Commodore John Denny transferred command ofthe US Naval Forces stationed at Fort San Francisco de Puerto Rico to Maj.-Gen Pedro Menéndez y Pelayo who organized an expedition against Acre (now Aruba) which resulted in the capture or burningof many Spanish towns along the Caribbean Sea coast including St Philipsburg (today Antigua). As part of this expedition, Menéndez y Pelayo built up a strong navy base near present day Panama City beach and erected batteries which could fire on any ship entering or leaving into that port. This fortress became known as "Majestic" after its completion in 1828 when it was used as headquarters for Admiral David Dixon Porter's Invasion Force during his abortive attempt to open up Central America to American trade via Nicaragua. The fortification remained operational until1862 when it was decommissioned due to budgetary constraints following Spain's brief but disastrous war with Mexico over control of its colonies in South America. Panama City Beach, Florida is a small town located in Panamanian territory. The name "Panama City Beach" was given to the beach by the Spanish because of its resemblance to Panama City, Panama. The town has a population of about 20,000 people and is located on the southern coast of Florida. It is known for its white sand beaches, clear waters, and friendly locals. The first European to visit Panama City Beach was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named the beach after his country's capital city - Panama - which he had seen from his ship anchored off the coast of Colombia. In 1821, American Commodore John Dickey destroyed an old Spanish fort at point Cruz de la Torre on San Pablo Island in what is now known as Dickey's Bay. This event helped start French Canadian trading interests in the area and also gave rise to Fort St Johns (now Jacksonville) as their primary port for Atlantic trade with Latin America during this time period. The town started out as a small fishing village near where today's Balboa Park stands. In 1915, when Panamanian dictator Ismael Santiso decided to build a new capital on San Pedro island to serve as his new nation's headquarters during World War I, he ordered all local fishermen away so that he could build a more permanent Naval Base at Point Cruz de la Torre instead! The result was beautiful white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters that still remain today! The town has a history dating back to 1892 when it was founded as an agricultural community on what is now known as Point Loma. The first residents came from various parts of the United States and Europe. By 1893, Point Loma had become an important seaport for goods shipped to the eastern U.S., and many European immigrants settled there including Italians and Germans who worked on the wharfside industries that developed around Point Loma. English-speaking Americans started arriving in large numbers after World War II to work in the shipyards and factories that were built along Clearwater Bayou adjacent to Point Loma. In 1957, Panama City Beach became part of Miami-Dade County when it was created from portions of Monroe and Pinellas Counties. In 1969, Clearwater Bayou was renamed Tampa Bay Waterway due to its role in supplying drinking water for Tampa city residents through underground pipes running through downtown Tampa before reaching Clearwater Beach on shorelines near Old Fort Myers and Belle Isle. In 1980, Point Loma Boulevard (now called Alabama Street) was designated by then-Mayor Dick Weprin as one of two long boulevards connecting Downtown Panama City with South Harbor Boulevard in St Petersburg which would eventually connect with I-75/SR 805 east of Gulf Breeze
