In 1972, BAS1 was replaced by Camp Blanding on land leased from the city of Panama City Beach; it is now home to both USMC Primary Combat Training Units (CPTU) and Marine Corps Reserve units In 1990, Congress passed a law authorizing Operation Neptune's Spear which led to the deployment of 2 battalions of Marines from Camp Pendleton into central Panama to help quell violence between drug traffickers and police officers; these Marines later returned home after concluding their mission without any combat casualties or injuries In 2000-2001 USS Coral Sea amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island arrived inbound from Guantanamo Bay Cuba carrying troops assigned to provide security for President George WBush's inauguration ceremonies aboard Constitution Square Dock; that year also saw reactivation of Miami-based Naval Air Squadron 146 (NASH146) as part of a Theater Security Cooperation Agreement between our two militaries USMC Special Operations Forces Command's Delta Team was activated at NASH146 on October 25th 2001 after participating in Operation Neptune’s Spear It should be noted that even today there are active USMC units based here such as Marine Aircraft Wing Three Hundred Eighty One (MAW3181), 3rd Battalion Regiment Quartermaster Company (3rd QMC), 8th Marine Regiment Light Armor Battalion - Southwest Florida Brigade (8th MARLB), 4th Special Forces Group Homeland Security Assistance Squadron - First Fleet Force

The city was founded in 1901 by Panama Canal Company employees as a resort town on the mouth of the Kissimmee River. In 1954, Panama City Beach became part of the United States after it was sold to the United States government for $20 million. The history of Panama City Beach dates back to 1892 when American businessmen James Kapp and George Beall purchased land at South Bay Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue in what is now downtown Panama City Beach. The men built a wooden hotel, which they called "The White Sands". In 1902, Kapp donated land east of South Bay Boulevard to create an undeveloped area that would eventually become known as Panama City Beach. In 1954, when Panamanian dictator General Omar Torrijos took power in a military coup, he decided to move his country's capital from Colón to Panama City Beach so that he could more easily control its people and resources. Torrijos' decision was met with opposition from many residents of Colón who felt their city was being taken away without their consent. A group of local business owners banded together and began lobbying US officials for their city's return. After several years of failed attempts, on December 15, 1958 – two days after Christmas – US President Dwight D Eisenhower signed legislation giving Panamanian citizens back their right to vote without interference from Torrijos’ regime. As a result, Panamanian citizens regained control over their own destiny and started developing this once-remote town into one of America's most popular tourist destinations today.
