The history of shooters in Panama City Beach, Florida goes back to at least the 1920s. The firstooters were a group of men who would go out and shoot rifles on the beach. They would bring their rifles over to the hotel where they would be stored. The hotel owner, J.B. Fenton, would then sell them to other people in town. By the 1940s, there were actually two shootings galleries inPanama City Beach- one was run by Commodore Bill Wessel and the other by Johnnie Ladd. In 1949, both these galleries closed down due to prohibition laws in Florida that were passed during World War II. However, shooters continued to come into town and use the hotels as shooting ranges until around 1957 when all guns were banned in Panama City Beach because of gun violence which had become a problem. After 1957, shooting traditions stopped completely in Panama City Beach because there was no longer any need for ranges or handguns because handguns had been made illegal in Florida! However, some people continue to shoot handguns recreationally here today!
