In 1844, a group of settlers, led by General James K. Polk, traveled to Florida and founded the town of Parkland on the Suwannee River. The town was named in honor of George Washington Park, who had donated land for the settlement. In 1865, Parkland was renamed Fort Walton Beach after Rear Admiral David F. Porter, commander of the U.S. Naval Station at Pensacola Bay. Between 1868 and 1876, Fort Walton Beach became a military post controlled by the Confederate States Army before it was surrendered to Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant on July 4th, 1876. After the surrender, Fort Walton Beach reverted back to civilian control and was renamed Fort Walton Beach again in 1886 as part of an effort to return it to its original nameakeship from Confederates during that time period in history. After years of development and growth within Fort Walton Beach proper (not including nearby Stonington), development outside of the city began happening in earnest starting around 1915 when a group of businessmen partnered up with local developer J.-L. Bourgeois to build what would eventually become known as “The Beaches” neighborhood which included much commercial property eastward along US-1A stretching all the way down into Daytona Beach (the area now known as North Miami). This migration towards more rural living also occurred in other parts of Broward County such as Deerfield Beach and Coconut Creek over time with some people even moving out into central Florida altogether while others simply relocated their businesses closer to home so they could still be near family or friends should something happen to them while away at work or vacation……..all this activity continued uninterrupted until 1933 whenFort Walton Beach officially lost its status as an open-air military base and became instead a closed-door community specifically geared towards businesspeople only once again becoming one of South Florida’s most exclusive neighborhoods thanks largely to various tax breaks that were given out by then-Mayor Joseph Ponte (a former state senator)…………….over time things changed back again with residents slowly but surely moving back into their homes despite all these new developments taking place…..until today where we can still see all those old businesses just off US 1A like Girdler’s grocery store from where I used to buy my ice cream…..or Gibson Bros., which originally opened up next door back in 1926…..or even that old Roper Theatre which probably went through many incarnations over its lifetime………. everything is still there just waiting for someone interested in checking it out
