Parkland, Florida is a town located in Broward County, Florida on the southern coast of Miami-Dade County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,459. Parkland is home to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and its associated campus, which has been closed since February 14th, 2018 after a gunman opened fire inside the school. The town of Parkland was founded in 1922 by businessman Harry A. Sprague and his wife Ruth Sprague as Pompano Beach on some undeveloped land between Boca Raton and Jupiter. In 1927, Harry Sprague purchased 1/4 acre (0.2 km2) of what would become Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School from Mrs. Jocko Smeaton for $5 per acre (1 hectare). The school's first students were seventh through tenth grades from nearby Coral Springs Elementary School in 1928-29. By 1930, enrollment had reached 375 students with thirty classrooms and an auditorium that could seat 400 people. In 1931-32 there were ninety three teachers and six secretaries present; by 1933-34 there were only fifteen teachers with one classroom and no natural light source at all! One hundred fifty four students attended classes during Spring 1934 without any lights or windows! Only 811 men were available for service in the Guard Corps; however, this was enough men to man 46 battalions (guard companies) and 10 regiments (national guard brigades). During World War II, there was a massive increase in activity within the Guard Corps as well as within other government agencies. In 1942 alone, there were 1 millionSoldiers called up for duty; however, only 5% actually served in combat. Of those troops who did serve, only 3% wound up being killed or wounded in battle. More than half of all Guardsmen died from causes such as accidents or disease during their service-time with the military. In 1945 Congress passed the National Security Act which created both a postwar National Guard force and authorized stateside defense planning for months ahead should world hostilities break out again. As part of Operation Overlord (the Normandy invasion), over 650 thousand soldiers from across America descended on England to help quell any potential rebellion or invading forces there might be- making it one of America's most impressive peacetime commitments ever made – even though almost all soldiers arrived without firearms or insignia! TheGuard also played an important role during racial integration throughout most of its history despite some protests by governors and flag-burning incidents by individuals involved in law enforcement and militiamen alike! As American society changed more rapidly after World War II ended and new technologies emerged that couldunctionally protect citizens at home or abroad (such as radar detectors for cars!), so too did the role of the national guard change so significantly over time- evolving into something far more specialized today than when it began its existence nearly 175 years ago!

The Parkland Massacre took place on February 14, 2018, when a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Twenty-four people were killed and 58 were injured. The gunman was later identified as Nikolas Cruz.
