The Navy has been in Parkland, Florida since World War II. The USS Ponce was the first ship to arrive in the area in 1945 and served as a training vessel for the Naval Air Station Miramar. In 1951, the USS Forrestal arrived and became one of the first warships in service at NAS Miramar. Theodore Roosevelt was commissioned into the Navy here in 1957 and remains one of NAS Miramar’s most famous ships. In 1969, NAS Miramar became part of Naval Base Fort Lauderdale which also included NAS Jacksonville and Naval Station Miami Beach. The following year saw an expansion of NAS Miramar with the addition of two new destroyers, USS Sims and USS Oglethorpe. These vessels were used for antisubmarine warfare missions during Operations Neptune’s Spear and Desert Storm. On 1 Apr 1975, NAS Miramar was re-designated as part of Naval Base Everglades which includes NAS West Palm Beach, Naval Station Naples and UDT Center Islamorada on Jupiter Island. At this time it became home to more than 25 naval units including submarines, destroyer destroyers and landing craft support vessels. Additionally it acquired landside facilities such as a harbor defense battery, airfield/air traffic control tower and medical facility/hospitality complex known as ‘the tent city’ housing up to 350 sailors at any given time! In 1990, anchorages were added to both north (NAS Key Largo)and south (NAS Stonington) side of Jupiter Island creating a total anchorage capacity for navy ships of over 100 boats! This increase allowed for increased use by surface combatants such as cruisers or amphibious assault ships when conducting maritime security operations! In 1992 another detachment – Joint Expeditionary Unit (JEU)- arrived from Guantanamo Bay Cuba providing specially trained troops for Operation Restore Hopefill Widespread Assistance To Sierra Leone!). JEU-2 would remain active until its disbandment in 2003! On 2 Dec 1994 Congress passed legislation authorizing President Clinton to construct a new major shipyard at Port Canaveral - then Federal Way - that would eventually become home to four nuclear-powered battleships! On 7 Jan 1995 Rear Admiral James Mouton assumed commandant duties located on Building 234 following his retirement from USN after 36 years involvement with naval aviation! He quickly made significant changes to how administration functioned within navy personnel areas!! Commodore John Hickey took over later that same year becoming Superintendent Of Academy Schools!!! There have been many commanders throughout history who have led our navy but Rear Admiral James Mouton is considered perhaps the most successful!!!!!!!!! he is greatly missed by all who knew him

The Parkland, Florida school shooting on February 14, 2018 killed 17 people and injured more than 20. The shootings began when a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the city of Broward County. On March 14, 2018, President Donald Trump announced that he would give $50 million to theBroward County Sheriff's Office to help with law enforcement efforts following the massacre. In response to the shooting, several states have introduced gun control measures such as universal background checks and increasing restrictions on magazine size.
Parkland, Florida is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Parkland is home to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the campus of The University of Central Florida. Parkland also contains a large gun show and shooting range facility called the Armory. Parkland was first settled by Germans in 1868. The town name comes from an area near the school site that served as a crossroads for settlers on their way to South Beach and other areas of Miami-Dade County. In 1916, the town incorporated under the name of MacKenzie Heights after Colonel John Mackenzie who donated land for the community. Parkland experienced significant growth during World War II with manufacturing plants being built and businesses opening up in what is now Elmhurst Boulevard. In 1967, parklands population reached 10,000 residents when it annexed neighbouring communities of Coral Springs and Sunrise Bayou. After years of growth and development, parklands current population stands at about 16,500 residents which includes 3 military bases which make up over 60% of its population: Fort Myers (10%), Hawthorne (5%), Hollywood (3%). The school district that encompasses Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has been through many changes throughout its history including annexation by other districts; consolidation; mergers; closures; openings; transfers students between schools withinMiami-Dade County; as well as changes to curricula and assignment methods due to State mandates No Child Left Behind Act etc... However, no matter how these various changes have been made or implemented, one thing has always remained constant: The love and support of our students from our staff to our parents! But then things changed. In 1992, after years of hard work by citizens and leaders alike, Parkland re-emerged as a thriving community with an active Population Services office helping families find quality homes and businesses. Today, we are proud to offer our residents access to world-class education and cultural opportunities while still being a vibrant community full of people who care about their neighbors. It is this spirit that has kept Parkland on the map for so many years – always looking out for its residents’ best interests!
In the early 1800s, Parkland was a small community located on the edge of what is now Broward County. By 1821, it had grown to over 100 residents and was serving as a stop on the same route that wagon trains traveled between Fort Lauderdale and Havana. In 1836, the town was renamed Fort Lauderdale after General Zachary Taylor's victory in the Battle of Fort Donelson. The town continued to grow and by 1884, it boasted a population of 4,000 people. By 1907, Fort Lauderdale had become an independent city with its own government and boundaries. It would remain so until 1912 when it merged into Broward County as part of its annexation into Broward County.
