Parkland, Florida is a small town located in Broward County, Florida. It was founded in 1917 by Dr. John W. Park and his wife Anna Mae. The community was named after Major General George Custer and his unit of the 5th Cavalry Regiment when they were stationed there during World War I. In 1951, Parkland became part of Miami-Dade County and it has since undergone several name changes including Suncoast City (1976), Fort Lauderdale (1989), and Parkland Heights (2002). In 2013, Broward County decided to annex all of Miami-Dade County into its boundaries making Parkland the lone unincorporated community within that county still functioning as an independent municipality. As of 2019, Parkland has a population of about 4,700 people who are all residents of the town itself as well as their surrounding areas which amount to about 12 square miles. The first permanent settler in what is now Parkland was Dr. John W. Park himself who arrived in 1917 from Ohio with his family after being hired by the United States government to help develop land for aviation purposes in southwest Florida at what is now Clearwater Beach on Palm Beach Island.[1] From 1922 until he died in 1938,[2] Dr. John W.'s son John F.'s father also served as park superintendent here at Suncoast City before moving on to become headmaster at Boys Ranch School near Hollywood while also working on developing other projects around the region such as a golf course and airport.[3] After John F.'s death in 1948,[4] his widow Anna Mae took over management here until her death in 1958; then it passed through her three children's hands until it was taken over by their father's brother Donald Denton prior to his own death in 1966.[5] Finally, it passed through various hands again before becoming managed by the current owners who purchased it from them in 2002.[6][7][8] Since its establishment, Suncoast City has seen some significant growth both nationally and internationally;[9][10][11][12][13][14] most notably being home to two major air travel hubs - one for American Airlines headquartered just east of downtown[15][16], and another for British Airways which is located adjacent to what used to be Sunrise Airport off Coconut Creek Boulevard just west of South Kendall Drive - both facilities serving many passengers daily during their peak hours throughout much of the early 21st century[17]: both airports have since been closed down or converted into commercial properties however they remain important tourist destinations today thanks largely to their location within walking distance or short trip driving distance from everything that Suncoast City offers residents:[18].
