Parkland, Florida was the scene of a school shooting on February 14th, 2018 that killed 17 students and faculty members. On Feb 14, 2018, seventeen students and teachers from Parkland, Florida were killed during a school shooting. It is now more than three months since the tragedy occurred and there have been no arrests or tips in relation to the shootings. In response to the school shooting, many organizations have stepped up their work in order to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. These organizations include Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum's " Gun Violence Prevention Task Force" which has worked on various projects such as creating educational materials aimed at preventing gun violence and promoting gun safety awareness; United Ways of Broward County which helps families facing economic hardships; Stoneman Douglas High School District 9 which provides crisis intervention services; and Parkland Shooting Survivor Foundation which offers support groups for survivors. In addition, churches are also having a significant impact on helping individuals affected by gun violence by offering prayer meetings, fundraisers, and other activities. It is clear that more needs to be done in order to help these communities move forward after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. There are many organizations working hard but there is still much that needs to be done in order for these efforts to truly succeed.

Parkland, Florida is located in Broward County, Florida. The population of Parkland was 27,673 as of the 2016 census. It is a suburb of Miami-Dade County. The school district that encompasses Parkland isBroward County Public Schools. The area that now makes up Parkland was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1836, a group of Baptists from South Carolina founded Fort Lauderdale while they were on their way to visit Cuba. They named the new settlement after Saint Petersburg (now Tampa). When Fort Lauderdale was destroyed in a hurricane in 1840, the Baptist settlers moved on and founded Winter Garden on 1st Street NW near what is now State Road A1A. In 1851, a group of investors formed the Townsite Company to purchase land north of Miami for development into what became Parkland. The town plat was filed February 12, 1852 and included Lots 5 and 6 which are now part of Sunrise Boulevard NE and Northwest Drive NW respectively. At its peak, Parkland had a population of 10 people and consisted only of two homes. Parkland’s initial growth came about due to its location at the intersection of two major roads: US 441 (now Sunrise Blvd.) and Dixie Highway/State Road 95 (now Sunset Boulevard). These roads led travelers to various destinations such as Ft Lauderdale or South Beach during those early days including when buses could not transported between these points because there wasn’t yet a bridge over state road 95! When it opened its doors for business on April 15, 1955 - exactly fifty years ago today - Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) was one among many schools in south Florida serving students from both rural areas as well as inner-city neighborhoods like Overtown and MidtownMiami Beach simply because there weren’t any other schools open anywhere near where we live today! BCPS has since become one of America’s largest public education systems with more than 280 thousand students enrolled through seven main campuses across six counties – inside Miami-Dade County; Palm Beach County; Broward County; Monroe Counties;and Hillsborough County!
