In 1812, during the Mexican-American War, Governor Manuel Antonio Sanchez called forth 2,500 volunteers from New Mexico and Arizona who served in Santa Anna’s MexicanArmy until he surrendered at Chapultepec on April 19th. This event marked the first time that an American soldier had fought in a foreign war sinceRevolutionary War days. By 1861, as America began to experience great political changes due to secessionism and civil unrest across the Union (including Maryland), congress had begun debating whether or not to raise an army for another potential conflict with Confederate forces in South Carolina or Alabama. On January 15th 1861 – one day after Abraham Lincoln was elected president – House Bill No. 8 approved by both Houses of Congress entitled “An Act Territorializing The UNITED STATES ARMY ACT OF 1860” proposed that all male citizens over 21 years old be drafted into service within six months should hostilities break out between the United States and any foreign country; this would mark an expansion of government militarism beyond peacetime functions into wartime times which became increasingly common throughout nineteenth century United States society. At first just a rural community with no stores or services other than a few farms and a post office operated by mail service, Wright's village rapidly grew into one of Florida's most important tourist destinations due to its natural beauty and history. Today's attractions include two golf courses – Pro Player Golf Course on Palm Beach Boulevard and Colonial Country Club Manor on Colonial Drive – numerous restaurants and bars including Lighthouse Key Brewing Company (the only brewery in the area), an extensive water park including both theme parks - Universal Studios Orlando Resort and Islands of Adventure - as well as several shopping malls including Mills Mall (once known as "TheVillage") located within walking distance of many businesses downtown while still being able to enjoy its historic district full of historical architecture dating back to 1884. There are also numerous smaller towns surrounding Pembroke Pines that offer unique experiences such as Hialeah Gardens which is primarily residential; North Miami Beach which includes some major shopping districts; Weston; Belle Glade; Port St Lucie; Martinique; Boca Raton; Lauderdale Lakes...and Miramar!

In 1814, Spanish settlers arrived and began trading with the Seminoles. A smallpox epidemic struck the area in 1819 andpanic immigrants started arriving in 1848. The name "Pinellas" was given to the community by one of its early residents, John Pinellas. The town began growing rapidly after it was incorporated as a city on November 1, 1898.
