By 1850 there were six houses in PEMBROKE PINES - all but one of them owned by white men. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), PEMBROKE PINES was part of Camp Sumter which operated out of Fort Brooke on Biscayne Bayou between Key West and Miami Beach during the Union blockade of southern Florida due to Confederate efforts to secede from the United States. A typicalday at Camp Sumter involved duty at low tide or when boats could not go into battery due to high waves; cooking over fires set among sandbags; collectingivory trash for shipment home; cleaning barracks, tents, living accommodations and stores; manufacturing munitions including cannons, mortar rounds, pistols etc.; conducting military drills; making war bonds for the Ulysses S Grant administration; singing patriotic songs outdoors under army banners while receiving visitors such as General Ulysses S Grant; playing games like checkers or chess according to rules issued by an officer stationed at camp Commanding Post In 1865 following Vicksburg's fall Mississippi River delta area became east Tennessee Territory under Union control following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which also freed all slaves within that territory including those living north of Memphis Tennessee (now Jackson County).
