The first Europeans to visit Pembroke Pines were Spanish explorers in 1692 who named it "Villa de las Americas." In 1821, Captain John Stroud and his party of British officers and soldiers founded Fort Brooke on an island in Lake Okeechobee. They used the place as their winter quarters before moving southward in February 1822 to found Palm Beach County. In 1828, General James K. Polk established Fort Brooke as a strategic military outpost on the eastern shore of what is now Clearwater Bayou. The U.S. Army moved into this fort in 1830 after Texas won its independence from Mexico and declared itself a state; it remained garrisoned until 1898 when it was abandoned due to economic reasons and became known as Fort Brooke Park (now Clearwater Beach). In 1840, Pembroke Pines was incorporated as a town by order of Governor Neely during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; it had been organized as one county seat but split between Hillsborough and Pasco counties because its residents were considered loyalists to Confederate States President Jefferson Davis over Union General Robert E Lee. The post office at PembrokePines opened on December 12, 1840, with Jno Sneddon serving as its first Postmaster General; he resigned effective January 1 next year due to health concerns related to alcoholism which had become rampant among both men living in poverty near Jacksonville wharfage posts along Tampa bayou banks where they could purchase alcohol for drinking while employed ashore or ashore while ashore aboard shipboard barge or steamboat running from Mobileport through Port Everglades upriver into Tallahassee Keys industrial district bordering Lakeland Peninsula where sugar plantations began operations about 17 miles southeast of downtown Pensacola Nearby Stonington Landing served primarily by steamboats delivering goods arriving from Cuba Canal At New Point Lookout Light House later replaced by lighthouse built on private property Owned by friends of local politician James Buchanan soon developed largest sugar plantation within state focal point Sugar production ceased after establishment of Interstate road connecting major Railroad centers by 1890

It is part of the Palm Beach–Boca Raton–West Palm Beach metropolitan area. The CDP was created on December 12, 2000 from the merger of two adjacent unincorporated communities – Pinecrest and Bellemeade. The name comes from Pembroke Island, which is located in Jupiter Bay near Bellemeade. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,816 people, 718 households, and 476 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 571.4 people per square mile (231.3/km²). There were 812 housing units at an average density of 282.7/sq mi (126.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population
