It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Pembroke Pines" was given to the town by Captain John Pemberton in 1821 while he was exploring what is now Pinellas County. He named it after his home village of Kemble near Oxford in England. Captain Pemberton's voyage had been directed by Commodore James Cook and he named many of the present-day islands and groups during his journey northward from Australia through New Zealand on his way to China. According to local legend, a large storm destroyed most of Palm Beach County in November 1912 when aCategory 5 hurricane hit without warning just beforeChristmas Eve. Many people fled to various evacuation centers throughout south Florida but some chose to stay behind because they felt that their homes would be spared if the hurricane hit them directly. A few people still live in this area today as result of Hurricane Andrew's damage twelve years later which caused extensive destruction throughout much of south central Florida including Palm Beach County. Pembroke Pines is a census-designated place (CDP) in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Pembroke Pines" was given to the town by General Andrew Jackson on November 7, 1824 as part of his plan for dividing up New York Township into five parts. The General had been appointed Surveyor General for Florida and was looking for a new home for his troops after the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He named the town after Major-General Robert Ewing Pemberton who had participated in that battle and also commanded one of Jackson's divisions during the Creek War. In 1868, Pembroke Pines became an incorporated village under Broward County law when it took over jurisdiction from Fort Lauderdale. The first post office opened in 1870; it was renamed Stonington two years later after Captain John Davenport Stonington who served as postmaster. In 1888, Coconut Grove annexed Pembroke Pines and development started there soon after with businesses like Jell-O and Coca Cola opening up shop near what is now I-95 eastbound exit 17A. Today’s skyline can be seen from Center Park to Sunrise Boulevard – all without leaving your backyard!
