It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Pembroke Pines were Methodist missionaries who came to this area in 1853. A post office was established at Pembroke Pines in 1861. The name of the town comes from a plantation where many planters took up residence during the early 1800s for their sugarcane crops and other agricultural operations. In 1886, an oil well was drilled in what is now downtown Pembroke Pines by Dwight Morrow and Company; this well became known as "Morrow's Well". In 1898, construction began on Morningside Cemetery which eventually replaced most of the old Plantation House/Schoolhouse complex that had been used as a slave quarters and courthouse from 1847 to 1865 (the last structure being demolished in 1929). Many businesses were started aroundtown during prohibition: The First National Bank opened its doors on December 12, 1920 - one day after prohibition ended; Joe's Cigar Store & Lounge opened on January 1, 1921; JW's Bar & Grillopened on February 17th - one week before prohibition effectively ended statewide; and Harry's American Legion Post No. 793A opened its doors on March 3rd - four days after Prohibition officially ended statewide. In 1928-29 two new churches were built: First Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church) and Second Presbyterian Church (now St John’s Episcopal Parish). At least twelve stores closed between 1926-1928 due to Prohibition – including JW’s Bar & Grill which lost eighty percent of its business since repeal began; but thanks to repeal being reauthorized by Congress three times prior to ending statewide on November 8th 1928 all those businesses reopened within seventy-eight days!
