In 1865, Pensacola was taken by Federal forces during Sherman's Overland Campaigns against ConfederateGeneral Robert Ewell Jr.'s army at Gaines' Mill; following this encounter, muchofthe historic district around downtown disappeared beneath piles of ruins known variously as "The Mill District", " Ruins Cove", or simply "The mill". However, due to persistent efforts by citizens and some local politicians over ensuing decades and through restoration projects managed by city officials and private individuals, many aspects of old Pensacola have been restored back to their pre-Civil War condition - most notably its architecture and neighborhoods.)
