The Coast Guard was founded in 1917 as the Florida Department of Marine and Fisheries. At that time, it was part of the United States Military. The first Coast Guard station in Pensacola was established on Santa Rosa Island in 1928. In 1951, the department relocated to its current location on Pensacola Beach. Today, the Coast Guard operates a fleet of more than 60 patrol boats and helicopters along Pensacola's coastline. The service also provides search and rescue services, medical assistance, and law enforcement duties. It is responsible for safeguarding both public safety and maritime interests along the state's 1,500 miles of shoreline. In addition to its core mission of protecting our coastlines, the Coast Guard also contributes significantly to local economies by providing millions of dollars in grants and donations to local organizations each year. Some of these initiatives have included support for arts programs, education opportunities for children, homeless relief efforts, and special needs programs such as autism awareness.

Pensacola, Florida is a small town in Escambia County, Florida. It is located on the Pensacola Bayou and has a population of about 26,000 people. The history of Pensacola goes back to 1821 when it was founded as Fort Marion by James K. Polk. Pensacola was given its current name in 1868 when it became the capital of Spanish Florida. The first permanent white settlers in Pensacola were Englishmen who arrived in 1818. By 1830, however, African Americans had started to arrive and form their own community in what is now downtown Pensacola. The area that is now Pensacola was then known as Indian Key because only Native Americans could live there without permission from the Spanish authorities. In 1835, Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Native American residents to leave or be deported. This order resulted in many innocent people being killed or captured by the Mexican army during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). As a result of this war and Mexico's annexation of Texas in 1845, most business activity within Spanish Florida stopped due to fear that Mexicans would cross into Texas and take over those businesses. However, some Portuguese immigrants did start businesses such as cigar shops and grocery stores until they were forced out of business during the Second World War because of American military occupation of Spain following the Mexican-American War. Pensacola, Florida history goes back to 1819 when a group of Spanish settlers called the "Fuerte de Pensacola" were founded in what is now Pensacola. The first white person to live in the area was Pedro Menendez who arrived in 1821. In 1830, Juana Escobar settled in Pensacola and became the first woman to own land in Florida. In 1840, Captain John Stonington landed at Aquia Creek on Padre Island and built a small fortification which he named Fort Stonington. The fort served as a base of operations for exploringFlorida and protecting Spanish interests along the Gulf of Mexico. On July 24, 1841, after successfully repelling an English attack on Fort Stonington, Commodore James Fenton decided to establish trading posts along the Gulf of Mexico coast. He appointed Rear Admiral George Dewey as captain of one of these posts and designated Pensacola as its capital. A year later on November 5th, 1841, during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Commodore Fenton abandoned his posts at Pensacola and sailed for New Orleans with his squadron under Rear Admiral David Porter to support General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's forces against American forces commanded by Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. After arriving at Veracruz on December 12th, 1846 he sailed back upriver to New Orleans where he relieved Porter just before Mexican independence was proclaimed December 20th. In 1898, after Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain following their defeat in the Spanish-American War (1898), Jacksonville became the new state capital of Florida while Tampa took over from Pensacola as its commercial center. After World War II ended with victory over Japan at Iwo Jima on September 2nd 1945, military occupations ended throughout most of Latin America including Cuba where Japanese troops had held control since 1941; Puerto Rico; Guam; Virgin Islands; West Indies etc.. The exception wasiawhere Ussher received permission from Roosevelt to continue operating an airbase at Diego Garcia until it was closed by British authorities October 1946 due to United States insistence that all islands be reorganized into a single territory called "Island Areas".
