Pensacola, Florida is a town located on the Gulf of Mexico in Escambia County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 34,477. Pensacola is the county seat and largest city in Escambia County. The official name of the town may be "Pensacola" or "Port Mayaca," but it is most commonly called by its proper name: Pensacola. The area that now makes up Pensacola was first settled by Native Americans in this region some 4,000 years ago. In 1819 Spanish traders arrived at Pensacola Bay and founded a new settlement called Port Mayaca on what is now known as First Street. A year later they named their new post Fort Moselle after Napoleon's marshal general who had led an expedition against them at Mobile Bay. By 1830 Port Mayaca had become an important seaport for Apalachicola River trade and with it grew Pensacola's importance as a fishing and shipping center well into the 21st century. In 1861 Jacksonville was founded adjacent to present-day Pensacola by Major General James Hernando de Soto and his force during his ill-fated attempt to invade Cuba from Tampa Bay; however, Jacksonville never caught on as a major port because there were no rivers nearby that could enable ships to enter Lake Okeechobee for shipment to Cuba directly. In 1871 Captain John Fisk landed his ship anchored off shore near where today's Naval Station Naples stands when he discovered oil reserves offshore; this led to rapid growth of maritime industry in Pensacola during the early 20th century through shipbuilding, fishing and other commercial activities ashore while also creating many jobs on land related to production operations plus service contracts with naval vessels afloat. On December 12, 1907 – less than two months after hurricane season began – Hurricane Frances caused extreme damage across much of Central America resulting in loss of life estimated at anywhere from 6% (in Panama) to 98% (in Honduras) - one third of all deaths during hurricanes that year!
