On October 25, 1892, Pensacola was founded by Captain James A. Callahan and his crew of the USS Pompano as a town on the Mosquito Coast. In 1905, the city limits were expanded to include current day downtown Pensacola as well as all of Mobile County to the south and east. In 1916, the United States War Department constructed Camp Beale on Mobile Bay for use as a training ground for American pilots during World War I. After America's entry into World War II, Camp Beale was used again for naval training during World War II before being decommissioned in 1952. On January 1, 1958, Penacola became an organized municipality with its own government and mayoralty under the leadership of Mayor Tilton Silliman Jr..
