In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln ordered Major George Armstrong Custer to march his troops through Santa Clara County en route to Mexico City through Mobile Bay for an interview with Mexican Emperor Maximilian I about starting a war against Mexico which would be known as the Mexican–American War. When Custer's column reached Fort Brooke Point on Big Piney Key he ordered his men not to fire onboats coming into or leaving Fort Brooke because they might hit one of his troops; this event is considered one of nineteen "milestones" associated with Peninsular Company activity in Central Gulf Coast towns during its heyday from 1865 until its disbandment in 1898. The first permanent settler in Pensacola was Captain Manuel Gomez who built a cabin on Stonington Key near today's downtown pensacolan center around 1800 AD; Gomez may have been inspired by Spanish explorer Vicente Yáñez de Balboa who had sighted land off Cuba’s coast earlier that year while exploring South America under licence from King Charles III (the future Pedro II).
