The national guard in Pensacola, Florida began as a military organization on July 1, 1907. The first members of the now-defunct battalion were men from Mobile, Alabama. They served in the Spanish-American War and then were mobilized for World War I. The battalion was disbanded after the war but was reactivated again on December 11, 1919 under the name National Guard Battalion No. 2. It participated in World War II as part of the United States Army Reserve and Regular Army brigades until it was disbanded on August 15, 1945. In 2000, both battalions merged into one entity and adopted new organizational markings which included black field without any stripes and dark blue shields with gold stars inside them; these shields are still worn today as part of unified insignia statewide. From its beginnings as an unarmed militia to its present role as a reserve force, the National Guard has played an important role in American life at every point in its history. The Militia Act of 1792 created the modern National Guard by authorizing each state to appoint up to 10 soldiers to serve without pay for three years. The Militia Act also authorized the President of the United States to call forth any number of volunteer soldiers from among the citizens of any state who had volunteered for service during wartime. These volunteers were known as “specifically called out companies” or “1st New York Regiment” because their formation was unique and governed by specific regulations set by Congress. Although not organized into battalions or regiments, these volunteers typically served together under a single commander and wore similar uniforms and equipment. This common structure helped protect members against potential enemy attack, and it also allowed units to be mobilized quickly if needed for military action outside their state. In 1812, Congress passed the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted Americans the right to keep and bear arms “for defense of self, family, friends, country . . .” TheNational Guard has since become one of America’s most meaningful vestiges of democracy – both physically and constitutionally –and continues play a vital role in our society today. The War Between The States (1861-1865) saw significant changes within boththe National Guard and American society as a whole. In 1984, Penfield Marine Systems Inc., a major exporter of seafood products from Pensacola's Port Of Spain Marina area opened its new facility adjacent to Naval Station Mayport which has since been renamed Mayor John Mina Park Center after him. The Pensacola area was first settled by Indian people in the late 18th century. A fort was built on the present-day site of Pensacola in 1794, and after a brief occupation by French forces in 1802, the area was annexed to the United States during the Mexican-American War. The town of Pensacola was founded on December 12, 1819, as part of what is now known as Florida's Third Seminole War. A new fort was built at this location in 1825 and named Fort Moultrie after General Robert E. Lee's victory over Native Americans at Montero Hill near Tampa Bay. In 1846, following a referendum passed by voters in Pensacola County, Florida, the state of Alabama acquired all of Spanish Louisiana (except for Mobile) and incorporated it intoAlabama as Jacksonville County. On January 1, 1861, Confederate General James Longstreet attacked Union troops at First Bull Run outside Petersburg while they were trying to retreat after being forced into a humiliating surrender; most believe that Longstreet may have been motivated by local anger over political debts incurred during the war. After Confederate troops retreated from Petersburg less than two weeks later, Confederate general Robert E. Lee ordered his army to march towards Montgomery in Alabama to capture that city before moving against Union forces besieging Chattanooga across Tennessee; however, on April 14 Confederate troops under Lieutenant Colonel Oliver O'Neal attacked an unarmed civilian militia unit called "the Petticoats" near Rossville without warning or cause; when challenged by members of this unit about their purpose for coming there (), O'Neal reportedly replied "I ain't no democrat!" In 1865 – following American Civil War ended – Pensacola became part of Reconstruction South Florida Territory which lasted until1870 when it reverted back to U.S. government control under Article V of Ulysses S Grant's Reconstruction Plan which placed power into hands of white southern men although black Floridians continued to be racially segregated until well into the 20th century
