Pensacola was founded on December 26, 1819 by Spanish Conquistador José María de Armas and his expedition under Captain Manuel Armijo. It was named after Naval Brigadier General Antonio de Pensacola y Valdez. The first white European to visit Pensacola was an Englishman named John Smith in 1763. On July 2nd of that year, Governor Andrew Jackson signed legislation creating the county of Escambia and naming it for him as its first county seat. Operational control reverted back to TCP/IATA upon withdrawal of Amtrak . Many businesses associated with TCP/IATA closed during this time including BankUnited plc., Gulf Steam Navigation Co., Merchants Shipping Lines Incorporated , JB Hunt Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Company ltd., Wacoal Rubber Company Ltd . post-war era saw continued growth with many new businesses opened such as Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space Co., Cox Broadcasting SystemIncorporated , Alliant TechsystemsLtd .. After several rounds of consolidation within TCP/IATA over the last few decades many smaller companies have been eliminated or have been folded into larger ones . Pensacola, Florida is the oldest town in the Pensacola-Ft. Walton County area and has been inhabited by Native American people for over two thousand years. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Pensacola were French explorers in 1565, looking for a new route to India. They named the cape "Fort St. Johns" after King John of England. The first permanent European settler in Pensacola was Nicholas de la Fayette, captain of La Fayette's expedition that explored Florida in 1763-64. He built a cabin on Cape Canaveral Island and named it Fort La Fayette (later Jacksonville Landing). In 1819, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered General James Wilkinson to build a road from Pensacola down Volusia County into Alabama so that goods could be transported more easily between those states. Wilkinson completed the road in 1825 but not before he lost his life trying to cross it at Big rivers Bridge.
