Pinecrest is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,754 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located on the west side of I-95 near Fort Lauderdale. Pinecrest began as a small farming community in 1926 when its founders acquired land from the Pinellas County Agricultural Company. The community name originated with its location on Pines Island in Lake Monroe, which was then the only natural island in that body of water. The first post office opened in 1928 and was called "Indian Key". In 1935, it changed its name to "Pinecrest". The political subdivision of Pinecrest was created by an act of the state legislature on November 3, 1944. At its creation, Pinecrest consisted of just a single block bounded by Northwest First Street (northwest corner), Northwest Second Street (southwest corner), Northwest Third Street (east corner), and Southwest Ninth Avenue (southwest corner). On May 1, 1951, Pinecrest annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Cutler Bay and Deerfield Beach for a total population of 10,746 people. On December 14th 1959 voters passed an ordinance creating City Hall with five elected officials: Mayor; Aldermen; Deputy Mayor; Trustee for Parks & Recreation; Treasurer; and Clerk/Register to Council meetings - all positions held by citizens regardless of party affiliation or electoral vote results during term limits set forth in city charter article V section 2 (term limits). Voting rights were granted to residents who resided within City Limits at the time annexation occurred or had their property annexed since 1959. A new school building completed in 1957 served as Pinecrest's main public facility until 1961 when it became Broward County's first high school under statehood law when West Side High School opened on Roosevelt Road adjacent to South Miami High School across I-95 from downtown Pine Crest upon annexation into Broward County effective November 3rd 1960 . Prior to this there had been several schools serving students located throughout what is now known as Boca Raton - Indian Key - Jupiter - Deerfield Beach - Cutler Bay
