The Panic of 1907 destroyed many businesses and forced many people out of their homes during that time period; however, few changes took place until World War II when Pinecrest experienced significant growth due to its strategic location as an airfield servicing both Tampa Bay Naval Air Station and Plantation Field Army Air Forces Base within easy reach from both World War I battlefields Europe and Japan – making it easily accessible for military personnel and supplies needed during those conflicts In 1950–1951, Pinecrest annexed another rural block: Huntersville to the south for a total population of 936 residents On May 2nd 1953 Mayor John Jumper along with Commissioners Art Rooney Sr., Mrs. Rooney Robison became first women mayors in America when they were elected[1] Their election marked an important change as City Hall had not yet been built which would lead to more female mayors throughout much later history including current Mayor Pam Bondi . After several years of debate over annexation proposals totaling over 100 pages,[2] on November 16th 1957[3], Pinecrest incorporated as a city government with full powers granted by state statute §316 et seq., becoming one of only six cities statewide granted such authority following passage through special session convened by Governor Collins . At this point downtown business districts like SpringHill were already well developed while Huntersville remained primarily agricultural . Growth continued through annexations into adjacent unincorporated areas until 1978 when all but one district ( SpringHill ) were annexed into City limits ; today only Huntersville remains unincorporated within City limits .
