Pinecrest is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,682 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Pinecrest were probably Frenchmen who started a trading post on the bayou in 1799. In 1802, Englishman John Ladd moved his family from Liverpool to start a cotton plantation there. In 1810, Dutchman Hendrick Kernsettt purchased land adjoining Ladd's plantation and built him a home - Pinecrest Manor - which still stands today. In 1821, Captain James Cook visited Pinecrest and called it "a very attractive place" because of its natural features: "the beautiful bayou with its many islands; the woods full of hickory trees; and several beautiful coves." He noted that its soil was very good for cotton farming and also praised the people for their hospitality. The next year, Captain Cook's son Christian named the town after himself – Captain Cookstown – in memory of his father's visit to this area two years earlier. In 1826, a group of businessmen from Mobile bought Ladd's plantation and began to grow cotton there as well. By 1830, Pinecrest had become an important commercial center within Polk County because of its location on Canoe Bayou (now known as Gulfstream Boulevard). A steamboat company was founded here in 1835 by Captains John Tilton and David Dixon using Lake Pontchartrain waterway transportation between Mobile and New Orleans. The town experienced some growth during Reconstruction when many African Americans moved into Pinecrest seeking opportunities beyond what they could find back east. However, most black residents maintain close ties to their southern roots while living side by side with white citizens throughout their lives withoutrance or discrimination
Pinecrest was founded in 1892 by Captain James S. Pine and his wife Anna Maria. The first post office in the town was established in 1900. In 1916, the name of the town changed from AnnaMaria to Pinecrest because of a referendum held to that effect. The town was incorporated in 1923 and became a city in 1959.
