Pinecrest is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pinecrest is located on U.S. Route 441 just outside of Kissimmee and is also near Eglin Air Force Base and Fort Walton Beach Airport. The first people to live in Pinecrest were French Canadians who came overland from Canada in 1821-22 during the First Seminole War. In 1824, General James Ewing built an agricultural clearing near present-day Pinecrest to produce pineapples for export to England and other parts of Europe under contract with George Washington's army as part of the Wartime Aristocrats program. A post office was established at Pinecrest in 1827, and by 1840 it had become a small village with a school, store, Masonic lodge, Presbyterian church (founded by Presbyterians), two churches (Anglican and Methodist), nine dwellings (six frame and three log), one gingerbread house (built about 1845), two blacksmiths' shops (one on Main Street and one on Third Street SW; both destroyed around 1955), four farmers' markets each week throughout the year, some sixty head of cattle/horses/ pigs/ poultry/, three lumberyards within five miles of town limits producing cedar boards for building wagons ornaments etc., six bushels per acre grown specifically for fruit production; seven households had indoor plumbing by 1865 when there was an electric line brought service into town; freight handled included sawing logs out of trees delivered along US 441; retail trade comprised a general store run by Mrs. Florence Hogg which became known as "The Gilded Cage" after it burned down in 1951; Mrs. Hogg organized dances at her home until 1957 when she sold the business to Willis Strand who operated it until his death in 1984; then it passed through several hands until it was bought by Donnie Nevins in 1990 who operated it until 2003 when it reopened as "Pine Crest Vineyards". In 1893 a group of businessmen led by John Murchison purchased land called Beaverdam Creek from Captain Denton Cobb for $5 thousand dollars believing that they could develop its potential as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil, clear streams running through its boundaries, woodlands nearby including swampy areas that would provide cover from potential Indian attacks so important to early settlers such as Captain Denton Cobb himself who thought Indians would only raid his property if he did not protect his land Murchison developed what became known as "Pine Crest" which began functioning as a commercial center with stores started up such as J & L Hardware Store opened in 1895 followed soon afterward by Poultry Products store founded 1902 Dentist Drury opened practice here in 1903 John Fenton Sperry arrived here circa 1907 looking for cotton fields northwest of Naples but found none so he returned southward via Palm Bay where he founded Fenton Sperry Agricultural Company hereabouts 1911 doing merchandising across country including buying 60% interest in citrus producer Champion Citrus Growers Incorporated 1917 before selling interests back to Champion Citrus Growers Incorporated 1924 In 1935 Cuban immigrants started arriving here seeking work opportunities during World War II following American military Occupation uniforms being distributed like rations among Allied forces camped along US 441 north east of town
