Pinecrest is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2000 census. Pinecrest is part of the Pensacola-Fernandina-Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is adjacent to military installations and has a small airport serving general aviation aircraft. The name Pinecrest came from the fact that there were no trees in the area until after development began. The first settlers were two men who lived on a farmstead near what is now downtown Pinecrest in 1884. In response to World War I efforts by President Woodrow Wilson to build an airplane factory in Tampa Bay, General Electric donated $1 million to finance the project which would eventually be named GE Aviation Company Park Place Airport after GE's president and CEO Andrew Carnegie . This new airport served not only local residents but also Marines stationed at nearby Fort Myers Beach and other Army posts across southeast Florida during World War II . For many years after its opening, GE Airport was home to both commercial airlines and USAAF fighter bombers based at Beaufort Army Air Field . Although it lost its status as operational USAF ground facility when Fort Myers AFB closed in 1959,GE Airport remained an important center for airline traffic through the late 1960s when All American Airlines merged with McGraw-Hill Airlines .
