The resolution indicates that Pinecrest has played an important role in both world wars and other conflicts since its inception as a small community on the riverbank. Today, though not as heavily defended as it once was (due to increased security measures), Pinecrest remains an important center for defense policymaking within Hillsborough County. Pinecrest is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2000 census. Pinecrest is the seat of Polk County and home to the Pine Crest School District. It is part of the Fort Myers–Cape Coral Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Pinecrest were French explorers Nicolas Perrot and Pierre-Luc L’Ouré on July 14, 1659, during their expedition from Louisbourg to Pensacola. They named it "Isle aux Meadows" after Loch Maree which they saw while exploring the west coast of Ireland. On October 10, 1663, Captain John Smith discovered what appears to be an uninhabited island just south of modern-day Pinecrest; he called it "Bermuda". This assumption by Smith may have been based on his erroneous belief that Isla Vegas was located within present day Fort Myers city limits which are only two miles (3 km) north of where Bermuda lies today. In 1795, Spanish explorer José de la Luz y Arregui explored much of central Florida before reaching Tampa Bay in 1796 and naming its mouth "Santa Rosa" after San Rocco (Rocafort), captain general of Cuba's army under Hernando de Soto who had sailed through that area earlier that year looking for new routes inland to find new markets for Spain's products including sugar cane and coffee. La Luz y Arregui also found a small island near present day downtown Pinecrest which he named Santa Rosa Bona Fide because it looked like a good place for 400 religious refugees who had landed there seeking asylum from India following Partition in 1947; these refugees were later organized into one group and known as the Amistad Islands Colony or simply as Santa Rosa Island Colony because they all spoke Portuguese or Spanish equally well. From this point forward most people living along Sarasota Bay knew about – and sometimes visited – Santa Rosa Island Colony although some still refer to it as "Ile aux Meadows." Thereafter - until 1853 when navigation changed so drastically around nearby Tampa Bay that many believe that Ile aux Meadows never existed - Father Jean Baptiste Brisson Jesuit Priest established Saint Joseph's Village on Ile aux Meadows between 1802-1803 using donated land then available off Anna Maria Shores Boulevard east of current day US Highway 1A/SR 628/Anna Maria Drive in what is now downtown Pinecrestalthough no church was actually built until 1854 when Father Jobin arrived with his brick church completed atop a hill overlooking present day North Main Street). In 1840 French colonists David Thibault and Régis Lafitte founded Fort Caroline on Santa Rosa Bona Fide but it failed due to lack of food resources while supplies ran low again in 1841; this time they contacted Englishman James Cook who sent HMS Resolution with supplies including 4 ships able to resupply Fort Caroline making landfall at latitude 28 degrees N 37 degrees W early January 1742 having traversed an entire tropical cyclone! After being stranded for weeks off Longboat Key due to high winds caused by Typhoon Joaquin Cook spent several days walking ashore tasting local fruits & flowers before sailing back out into open sea where he rejoined Resolution four days later having covered nearly 500 miles (800 km) over very harsh weather conditions!)
