Pinecrest is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. Pinecrest is located on State Road 7 between A1A and A1B roads east of south Miami Beach. The first settler in Pinecrest was John Banister, who arrived in 1836. Banister's son-in-law, James Witherspoon, also settled in Pinecrest shortly after its founding. In 1838, Witherspoon and his family built a frame house on the present site of the Post Office building. In 1840, Captain Jesse Dean moved to Pinecrest from Key West with his family and began to farm there. The first store in Pinecrest was operated by Jethro Cook from 1841 to 1845; it closed after one year due to lack of business competition. In 1850, Colonel Jeremiah Denton bought land along SR 7 near what is now Kealakekua Bay for $2 per acre (about $ today). Denton started construction on what would become known as "Denton House". He named it after himself and donated the land to the community for use as a public school ground and town square. This first school was open until 1886 when pinegroves made possible an expensive new brick school building which still stands today behind Main Street downtown! They built homes around 1900 while others constructed businesses such as cotton ginners, storekeepers, restaurants etc., which continued until World War II when most residents left for military service or took other opportunities out of state or country due to economic instability caused by war-time rationing policies that impacted every aspect of life including food production (See "In Search Of Our Ancestors" link). Today's citizens are descendants of those original settlers with important roles including elected officials like Mayor Tom McMillin; community members such as firefighters/EMTs; daycare providers; blacksmiths; plumbers; carpenters; electricians; mechanics; dairy farmers/cowboys/women drivers for milk delivery services) among others who have made significant contributions to our culture, economy & community over these many years!
