Pinellas Park, Florida is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 5,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg metropolitan area and is served by Pinellas Park Public Schools. The community was founded in 1892 by J.B. Anson and his family as a small village on the east side of Clearwater Bay. In 1912, Anson donated land to the city of Clearwater for development as a resort town with bathing beaches, golf courses, and shopping centers. The name change to Pinellas Park in 1935 when the city annexed the nearby towns of Dunedin and Belleair Beach. In 1965, Pinellas Park became part of Hillsborough County when it was combined with other areas north of Boca Raton to form that county's new urban center. Many residents who had lived in Hillsborough County for many years decided to move to Pinellas Park because it had more services and appeared more developed than its counterparts in neighboring counties. Pinellas Park has been home to many professional athletes over the years including professional wrestlers Hulk Hogan (the son of Andre The Giant) and Stone Cold Steve Austin; golfer Phil Mickelson; tennis player Novak Djokovic; NFL players Ray Lewis (the father of Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis), Derrick Brooks (the father of Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Marcus Spears), Donte Stallworth (of Dallas Cowboys fame), Curtis Martin (of Miami Dolphins fame) and Reggie Bush (brothers Michael and Ryan). In 2003, Forbes listed Pinellas Park as one of "America's Top 25 Places To Live." That year it also received recognition from International Living magazine as one of "The World's 50 Best Place To Live". Pinellas Park is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The land that makes up Pinellas Park was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who named it after Count Alexander von Humboldt's holdings in what is now Argentina. In 1845, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army passed through the area on their way to meet Ulysses S. Grant at Gettysburg, and while here they rested at a plantation owned by John Lubbock where they were entertained by General James Longstreet. After the battle, Longstreet ordered his men to burn down Lubbock's plantations so that no one would ever again own slaves in Florida.[1] The first post office for Pinellas Park was established on January 4, 1851,[2] and its charter was granted on May 2 of that year.[3] On December 22nd of that same year, Congress authorized the purchase of 1 square mile (0.6 km2) from Jno Atherton for $5 per acre (0.24 ha).[4] This land became known as "Atherton's Field".[5] The first house to be built on this property was located in what is now downtown Pinellas Park[6][7][8][9][10]. During this time there were very few people living in what is today Pinellas Park because most of it consisted of swampy land which had to be drained and improved before being developed into homes or businesses;[11][12][13][14]). In 1873,[15], a school district called South Broward School District No. 6 was created out of portions of east St Johns School District No 5 and parts of west Palm Beach School District No 3;[16], with pine trees as oneof its centerpiecesthe initial planting programofthe new districts; Today South Broward still uses pine trees as part of its branding/logo
Pinellas Park was founded in 1892. It is named for General James Pinellas, who fought in the Seminole Wars. The first post office at Pinellas Park was established in 1897. In 1916, the city of Tampa annexe Pinellas Park and since then it has been part of the city.
