Pinellas Park, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 5,272 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami-Hollywood-Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Pinellas Park comes from two separate places in central Florida: Pinellas Key and Hillsborough Bay. The bay was named for Captain James Cook's ship "Endeavour" which made landfall there on 17 November 1609 during his first voyage around the world. Captain Cook named the key after General John Covington's father-in-law, MajorGeneral Thomas Lynch (1579–1644), who had led an expedition to take possession of what is now Tampa Bay on 8 November 1592. In 1821 by act of Congress, it was organized as a township with its head office in Boca Raton and six other townships were formed out of it within five years: North Pinellas (1827), South Pinellas (1830), East Fort Myers (1835), Central Fort Myers (1839), and West Palm Beach (1841). In 1912, all but one township were disbanded when Broward County was created from Dade County; West Palm Beach remains part of Broward County today. On 9 July 1907, a fire destroyed much of downtown Boca Raton (), killing three people and leaving over twenty buildings destroyed or damaged including several synagogues (). As a result of this tragedy, Mayor Charles Ayer proposed that city fathers create a park in downtown Boca Raton to serve as both a memorial to those killed and also as an educational center for future civic leaders. Assistant City Manager Harry Emmons set about organizing committees to design and plan the park which would include landscape architects Hiram Sasser and Arthur Ashe with help from local businessmen Hjalmar Schachtelenbachs ()and Emanuel Schiffman (). On 1 December 1907, Mayor Ayer announced plans for the new park which would be located between First Street NW and State Road 56NW near Busch Gardens/Sea World (). The park originally consisted only of area north of First Street NW including parts of Government House Square (); however due to popular demand it has since been expanded to include more than . Today it contains more than , acres ()of parksland,,a playground,,an arena,,a library/,a nursery school/,and several golf courses/.
