Pinellas Park is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the Gulf Coast about 20 miles north of Clearwater and 30 miles south of Tampa. The first settlement in what would become Pinellas Park was made by pioneers who migrated from northern Georgia in 1841. They named their new community after a small pine tree they saw while traveling through the area on their surveying trip. In 1843, another group of pioneers arrived and named their new community after General James K. Polk, then President of the United States. This name was changed to Pinellas Park in 1845 when a railway company built a line between St Petersburg and Clearwater and needed to give its passengers an alternate name for each town they passed through on their way to Tampa Bay. Pinellas Park became a city on December 15, 1959, with passage of legislation by the local government that granted it independence from Clearwater Township which had been its parent municipality since 1907. On November 2, 1961, Pinellas Park incorporated as a village with just over 1,000 residents According to the 2000 census there were 10,021 people living in Pinellas Park according to the 2000 US Census Bureau estimate; this figure has decreased since 2001 due largely to population loss throughout much of southern Pinellas County including nearby Osceola County and Seminole County (the latter two forming part of Hillsborough county). Pinellas Park is a census-designated place in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Pinellas Park were white men from Georgia and South Carolina who arrived in 1824. They named their land after General James K. Polk's plantation on Lake Calhoun in Georgia which they had visited while on military duty during the Seminole Wars. The Polk family later moved to St Petersburg and became landowners there before selling their land to other citizens of Pinellas Park in 1885. In 1907, the city of St Petersburg annexed Pinellas Park and incorporated it as a town under its jurisdiction. In 1931, following annexation by the city of St Petersburg, Pinellas Park lost its charter as a town but retained its right to levy taxes within city limits and make decisions about public affairs that did not require unanimous approval from all residents of both cities (such as zoning ordinances). On December 10, 2006, City Council voted 7-0 to annex Pinellas Park back into the city after more than two years of discussion and study led by City Manager Rick Smith On January 1st 2007 annexation took effect with no protests or opposition from either city officials or residents
Pinellas Park was founded on November 12, 1868 by Captain James P. Pinellas and his wife Julia. The first post office in the park opened in 1870. In 1881, the city of Tampa annexed Pinellas Park, making it a municipally owned public park with a $2 million budget. The park became an amusement park in 1912 and then a golf course in 1936. In 1951, it was renamed to Pinellas County Fairgrounds after the county seat of Hillsborough County, Florida which had annexed Pinellas Park into its territory. In 1965, most of the fairgrounds were destroyed by Hurricane Andrew which damaged many buildings and killed several people. reconstruction began almost immediately and ended less than two years later when Hurricane 67 hit southern Florida killing more than 60 people including many top aides to Governor Lawton Chiles
