The city is home to some of the most well-known and popular amusement parks in the country such as Universal Studios Orlando and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. There are also several shopping districts and lakes that make up the municipality. The first people to live in what is now Pinellas Park were Native American natives who called it "Turtle Bay." In 1868, Jacksonville settler John Witherspoon bought 1,000 acres of land at what is now downtown Pinellas Park from the Seminole Tribe for $2 million. The area became known as "Witherspoon's Prairie" because Witherspoon donated all of his profits from his cattle business to help support development in this area. In 1892, a gas station and post office were built on what are now University Drive and Gulf Boulevard. This was followed by a movie theater (the first in town) in 1916 which helped grow the economy around here. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Pinellas Park with an average of 10 employees each! In 1927, Witherspoon Elementary School was built on what are currently Third Street South and Gulf Boulevard; this was followed by nearby Witherspoon High School (now Jackie Robinson Middle School) in 1928. These schools continue to serve as important parts of Pinellas Park today! During World War II, much development took place within Downtown Pinellas Park thanks to military barracks being constructed here including Old US Army Hospital #1 which still stands today across from City Hall on First Avenue North! Other buildings constructed during or after WWII include: US Post Office - Still standing today at 216 University Drive North; Holyoke Savings & Loan - Now part of Champions Bank; Lighthouse Motel - demolished and replaced with Embassy Suites Hotel; Western Union Telegraph Switchboard Building - still standing next door to defunct Hooters restaurant

The region around Pinellas Park has been inhabited for centuries by Native Americans and Spanish colonists. The area became part of the United States in 1828 and was named Tampa Bay after James Kenedy, a British citizen who had married an American woman named Anna Thornton. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Tampa Bay became part of Florida under Confederate control and saw many skirmishes between Union troops and Confederate sympathizers until ultimately falling to Union forces on December 12th, 1862 at Gaines Mill. As Florida developed into a state during Reconstruction following America’s involvement in the war, pine trees were planted along its rivers due to their high content of sugarcane (which then made them affordable for plantationowners). On September 14th 1870, residents of Oldtsville voted 3-2 in favor of annexing what is now Pinellas Park from Hillsborough County so that it could become a separate county with its own government entity under Republican Governor David Brower. On November 8th 1870 – less than two weeks after they had voted on annexation – Brower vetoed the amendment because he felt that Hillsborough County should remain intact as part of Georgia while Pinellas Park should be given its own government structure within Florida pursuant to Article IX section 7 of the Constitution which stated: “No person … shall be compelled … except through voluntary submission to such authority [Hillsborough County] as Congress may provide” This veto effectively ended any effort bybrower or his successors at Tallahassee to annex Pinellas Park into Hillsborough County; however this did not mean that annexation never happened; rather regulatory duties were transferred from Hillsborough County allthe way down to Pinellas Park’s municipal government which began operations on January 1st 1871″ On October 6th 1872, Captain George Yancey founded Clearwater Harbor Company with intent of developing an intermodal shipping terminal on Tampa Bay Bass Strait southeast of New Smyrna Beach which would serve both passenger vessels and freighters arriving from Europe via TCP/Tampa Bay Railway Station located south east across Lockridge Street from Clearwater Harbor Company’s wharf christened Yancey Pointe Lighthouse today called Marina del Rey Marina Lighthouse today just west end Of Gulfstream Center Dr., unincorporated community located near intersection Rte SR 527 & US 19 now part Of St Petersburg city limits In 1898 Fort Brooke burned down leaving only ashes behind In 1898 Pensacola bought Fort Brooke land including what is now downtown Pensacola Punta Gorda annexed parts including present day Pennington Island in 1903
